Twenty-three years operating. Twenty years since I did my first sleeve gastrectomy, in January 2006.
It was still a new operation back then. I was the first in Victoria to do it. The conversations with patients looked different. More explaining, more uncertainty, more careful watching. Nobody had the long-term outcomes yet, because there weren't any.
Two decades later, the field has sanded down a lot of the rough edges. We know the operation better. We know who it suits and who it doesn't. The technique is tighter. The aftercare is built out properly. The evidence that barely existed in 2006 now runs deep.
The part that hasn't moved is the bit that actually matters. Sitting across from someone. Listening. Working out together whether this is the right step for them. No two patients are the same. No decision should be rushed.
