๐Ÿง  Signs and Symptoms of MS ๐Ÿง

MS can manifest in a variety of symptoms, which can differ from person to person. Common signs include:

Fatigue: A pervasive sense of tiredness that is not relieved by rest.

Numbness or Tingling: Especially in the face, arms, legs, or fingers.

Muscle Weakness: Often in the legs and arms, leading to difficulty walking or maintaining balance.

Vision Problems: Blurred or double vision, or even loss of vision in one eye at a time.

Spasticity: Stiffness and involuntary muscle spasms.

Dizziness and Vertigo: Feeling off-balance or lightheaded.

Pain: Chronic pain or muscle spasms.
Cognitive Changes: Issues with memory, attention, and problem-solving.

Bladder and Bowel Dysfunction: Difficulty controlling bladder or bowel movements.

Emotional Changes: Mood swings, depression, or anxiety.

MS is often unpredictable, with symptoms ranging from mild to severe and sometimes coming and going.

๐Ÿ’Š Treatment Options for MS ๐Ÿ’Š

While there is no cure for MS, various treatments can help manage symptoms and slow disease progression:

Medications: help reduce the frequency and severity of relapses, reduce inflammations during flare ups and help manage spasticity.

Exercise and Physical Therapy: Helps improve strength, mobility, and overall function.

Pain Management: Includes medications and other therapies to address chronic pain.

Lifestyle Modifications: Regular exercise, a healthy diet, and stress management can improve overall well-being.

Supportive Therapies: Occupational therapy, speech therapy, and counseling can provide additional support.

๐ŸŽ—๏ธ Why Awareness Matters ๐ŸŽ—๏ธ

Understanding MS can lead to early diagnosis and treatment, which can help manage symptoms and improve quality of life.

Yesterday our Exercise Physiologist Emma rode 130km in the MS bike ride to raise awareness for Multiple Sclerosis.

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic illness affecting the central nervous system, which includes the brain and spinal cord. It occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks the protective sheath (myelin) that covers nerve fibers, leading to communication issues between your brain and the rest of your body.

Unfortunately, it is progressive in nature and has no cure.

Every week we see the effect MS has on our clients and the more awareness and money raised towards research in this area will hopefully help those living with this condition.

This week we will be shining a light on MS so if you have any questions or information, you would like us to cover drop it in the comments below โฌ‡

This is some great evidence based information that we need to hear more of.

Get on your bike!!

Ok, if you know me you know I love my cycling. Having research to back it up is even better!

But seriously, it is a great way to increase lower limb strength, improve cardiovascular fitness, maintain a healthy weight, help knee range of movement and reduce knee pain.

This study shows not only does cycling reduce knee pain but also radiographic and symptomatic evidence of osteoarthritis. And benefits are cumulative meaning the more the better!

If you are navigating knee pain, cycling is a great non weight bearing exercise option.

This week is the last week of the exercise right challenge consisting of 30 min of movement for 30 days in May.

Over the last few weeks we have highlighted ways to keep active and build healthy exercise habits.

Exercising with a friend or as part of a group can help you get started and build consistency.

Knowing you have someone waiting for you gives you accountability and can reduce the potential of skipping out on a session.

It can help build confidence in your ability leading to more consistency and progress.

Surrounding ourselves with likeminded people who are working towards similar health-related goals can be encouraging and motivating. It fosters friendship and connection.

This could look like joining an exercise class or club, having an accountability partner to exercise with or just having a walk and talk catch up with a friend.

There are so many benefits to exercising with a friend or part of a wider social group.

The risks associated with inactivity far outweigh the risks of injury associated with exercise.

Inactivity leads to:

Loss of muscle mass, leading to weakness, increased frailty and falls risk.

Reduction in bone density, increasing the risk of fractures.

Metabolic disorders including insulin resistance, obesity, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome.

Cardiovascular disease and stroke.

When exercise is done correctly, under proper guidance, with an appropriate starting point and intensity the benefits far outweigh the risks of inactivity.

As exercise physiologists, this is precisely what we are here to help with.

Let's make moves together.
