REPARENTING is the HEART of SCHEMA THERAPY!
I love listening to Wendy and Joan’s deliberate practice seminars as they remind me of the importance of schema therapy going beyond the warmth, validation and caring of standard therapy.
With a clear and thorough case conceptualisation we can hear the need, identify the schemas and see the patterns of coping that perpetuate the problem. This is what makes a schema therapist and this is required for schema accreditation!
Your client attends their therapy session agitated and preoccupied with a work task that has to get done today and they are instead focussed on this, rather than being in the therapy room. You identify this preoccupation and raise awareness to it. In standard therapy that might be enough and we might move onto a therapy plan for the day.
In schema therapy, we attune to this preoccupation (coping mode): I know that when you were younger you had to take care of things as mum was unwell and there was no one there to take care of you. You could never let anything slip as it could have severe consequences if you did and you feel this same worry and fear today. The what if of what might happen if you can't get that thing done. Can we tune into this fear and worry of your little one right now, so that we can show up for her and take care of her today, in the way she always needed?
Being able to attune to the clients story, see the schemas, coping responses and needs allows us to respond in a deep way that creates transformative change for the client.
This is the art of being a schema therapist.
If you want to build your confidence and skill to do this, join Lynda Parry and I at our Advanced Skills workshop 15-16 June, Rydges Darling Square, Sydney.
This is a must for those undergoing accreditation (will provide group supervision hours) and a great PD opportunity for others.
Day 1 Schema Case Conceptualisation
Day 2 Schema Foundations
Attend one day ($450) or both days ($800).
We hope you will join us.
