As we wrap up our February theme ValenSpine 💕and learn to love our spine, it is important to remember that spinal health is not just about posture. It is about our nervous system too.
Our spine protects the spinal cord, the communication highway between the brain and body. When posture is poor, movement is limited, or stress is high, the body can shift into a protective state. Muscles tighten. Breathing becomes shallow. Heart rate increases. Over time, this may influence sleep, focus, digestion, and overall wellbeing.
Supportive spinal care and healthy movement habits help send signals of safety to the nervous system. When the body feels supported, it is more likely to shift into a relaxed and regulated state.
Here are simple ways to show our nervous system some love:
♡ Align posture
Stack ears over shoulders and ribs over pelvis. Reducing forward head posture decreases strain on cervical muscles and may reduce tension-related headaches.
♡ Breathe with intention
Slow nasal inhale (4 seconds), longer exhale (6–8 seconds). Research shows extended exhales stimulate the vagus nerve, helping lower heart rate and promote relaxation.
♡ Move regularly
Standing, stretching, and gentle mobility every 30 to 60 minutes improves circulation and reduces sustained muscle tension.
♡ Seek supportive care
Spinal assessments and targeted chiropractic care can help optimise joint function, reduce mechanical stress, and support clearer communication between brain and body.
When the nervous system feels safe, the body can move from survival mode toward recovery and restoration.
Loving our spine is one of the simplest ways to support our whole system 💞
