Birdwatching is such a lovely way to enjoy the outdoors 💙🦜

It can be calming, joyful and full of little moments of wonder, especially when shared with others. For participants who enjoy nature and birdlife, there are some beautiful places across Queensland worth exploring.

Maleny Botanic Gardens has accessible parking and toilets, wheelchair-friendly access to the café and Bird World, buggy support, and golf carts that support wheelchairs. The team does note that some garden roads can be steep and Bird World has gravel surfaces, so extra support may help depending on the visit.

Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve offers a free 4WD all-terrain electric wheelchair that can be booked in advance, with availability between 10:00am and 2:00pm daily. It is designed to help visitors explore the 1.3 km Pademelon Loop rainforest walk.

Osprey House Environment Centre is also a great local resource, especially for groups or visitors needing assistance, and their nature ideas page highlights nearby places such as CREEC and Pumicestone Passage for wildlife and birdwatching.

Check the comments for the links and a few great places to start exploring. 💙

15 years of Beacon Support 💙

A Message of thanks from John, Andrew and Sidney:

“Almost 15 years ago, a small group of people saw a need to help others in a professional and caring way. Beacon Support was born. Our first office was the side of a garage, with 2 desks and one phone. Our first client needed eye drops 4 times a day, her name was Josephine. We help people live, we have supported people as they have died. With great trained staff we have cared and supported a great many people. Every person's story is different and we continue to cater to our client's individual needs. Our motto is: Life Enabling. That is as true today as it was on our first day. We are proud to be "Beacons"!”

Yesterday, we celebrated in the park with our participants over some yummy food and great conversation, and honestly, it was such a special way to mark 15 years. Looking around at everyone, sharing stories and enjoying the moment together, was a beautiful reminder of what Beacon Support has always been about.

With sincere thanks and gratitude, we are so thankful to have had the opportunity to care for and support our participants over the years. It has been a real privilege.

Cheers to 15 years, and here’s to another 15 ahead. 💙

We’re hiring a Part Time Registered Nurse to join the Beacon Support team in Brendale

This is a great opportunity for an experienced RN looking for a flexible 2 to 3 day per week role where your knowledge, care and clinical judgement can make a real difference. We also encourage EN's (Enrolled Nurses) to apply.

Based in our Head Office, this position supports our frontline teams who provide 24/7 care to participants with high-complex health needs across South East Queensland. The role is largely telehealth-style, offering advice, education and support over the phone, while also including some hands-on tasks like catheter changes, continence assessments and training delivery.

We’re looking for someone with strong disability, aged care or community-based experience who is confident, compassionate and aligned with the values that shape The Beacon Way.

Essential criteria:
🔹 Bachelor of Nursing with current AHPRA registration
🔹 Minimum 2 years of RN experience
🔹 Current CPR and First Aid
🔹 Blue and Yellow Cards, or willingness to obtain
🔹 Right to work in Australia
🔹 Driver’s licence and own transport

This is an office-based role in Brendale, and because it includes participation in an on call rotational phone roster, it may not suit someone already working in another part-time position.

If this sounds like the right fit for you, please DM us with your CV and cover letter.

There are many ways to participate this ANZAC Day. 💙🩵

For some people, that may be attending a dawn service.

For others, crowds, noise, early starts, travel, or long waits can feel like a lot, so a later service or a quieter moment of reflection may feel more comfortable.

In Brisbane, the Dawn Service at Anzac Square starts at 4:28am. After that, Anzac Square Memorial Galleries are open from 5:30am to 3pm, which may suit people who would prefer a calmer way to reflect.

The Brisbane parade also runs later in the morning from 9:45am to 12:30pm, with viewing along Adelaide Street.

For people who would rather take part from home, Cairns Regional Council shares that the Cairns Dawn Service will also be livestreamed on YouTube from 5:25am. Logan Central also has a 9:00am Morning Service, which may be a better option for people who need more time for morning routines, support, transport or medication.

There are also many smaller local services across Queensland, including on the Sunshine Coast, in Logan, on the Gold Coast and across other local communities. Sometimes a smaller local service can feel more manageable than a larger city event.

What are your plans? Let us know in the comments? You can live stream the service here Anzac Day Services

We wanted to share BIG4 Caloundra Holiday Park as a destination idea for Beacon Support participants and families looking for more accessible travel options across Queensland. We love highlighting organisations that are working to create more inclusive and accessible experiences for their guests. 💙

A special thank you to Alex Derickx, General Manager, for sharing these photos with us. Pictured here is Michelle Pownell, enjoying the experience.

BIG4 Caloundra Waterfront is located on the Sunshine Coast on the Pumicestone Passage. The park promotes a number of features that may be helpful for guests looking for more accessible options, including an accessible camp kitchen, an accessible-entry pool, and accessibility-friendly Grevillea cabins with ramp access, wheelchair-friendly kitchen and bathroom spaces, and lifted beds.

Alex also shared that their Activities Coordinator, Nick, comes from a background in disability support work with children. He has introduced regular sensory play activities into their weekly programs and is currently helping develop tailored programs for disability group’s. That kind of care and thoughtfulness can make a real difference.

We know accessible travel is not one-size-fits-all, but it is always encouraging to see destinations thinking more intentionally about how people experience their stay.

Looking for a simple savoury recipe to try at home? 🍽️

These savoury zucchini fritters are easy to make, full of flavour, and a great little at-home cooking activity to enjoy together. With just a few simple ingredients, they are a fun way to build confidence in the kitchen while creating something warm, crispy, and delicious to share.

Start with:
🔹 2 medium zucchini
🔹 1 egg
🔹 1/4 cup flour
🔹 1/2 cup grated cheese
🔹 2 to 3 tablespoons finely chopped onion or spring onion
🔹 salt and pepper

Bonus tips for our mini master chefs (to really make these extra yummy)! If the mix still feels too wet after squeezing the zucchini well, add a little more flour, if it feels too thick, stop there and do not add more

How to make them:
Step 1: Grate the zucchini and squeeze out as much excess moisture as you can.
Step 2: Finely chop the onion or spring onion.
Step 3: Add the zucchini, egg, flour, grated cheese, onion, salt, and pepper to a bowl.
Step 4: Mix everything together until well combined.
Step 5: Heat a little olive oil in a frying pan over medium heat.
Step 6: Spoon small amounts of the mixture into the pan and gently flatten into fritter shapes.
Step 7: Cook until golden on one side, then turn and cook the other side until golden and cooked through.
Step 8: Serve warm and enjoy.

This is such a great recipe for getting hands busy in the kitchen and creating something simple and satisfying from scratch. If you give these a try, tag us in your creations. We would love to see your zucchini fritters. 💙

Finding wheelchair accessible restaurants can be way harder than it should be. 💙

You start with good intentions, type in a simple search, and before you know it, you are on page three of Google thinking, how did I even end up here?

Half the time it is sponsored posts. The other half can be vague, outdated, or just not that helpful.

So we decided to do some digging ourselves and found something that is actually really useful.

OpenTable has a filter that lets you search specifically for wheelchair access, which makes it so much easier to explore restaurant options in a more practical and intentional way.

It is one of those simple little tools that can save a whole lot of time, frustration, and second-guessing when you are trying to plan a meal out.

If you are a participant, family member, carer, or support worker looking for a better place to start, this is well worth checking out.

Check page 2 of this post for the step-by-step instructions on how to use the filter.

This is what Easter is all about 💙

Our participants and team came together to celebrate, connect, and enjoy the day, and even when the weather tried to rain on our plans, the team quickly pivoted and made sure the fun didn’t stop.

From creative activities to plenty of laughs, it turned into one of those days that everyone will remember.

A special shoutout to Cathy, one of our amazing participants, and our support worker Lea, who created the Easter hats that brought so much colour and personality to the day 🐰

These are the moments we love most. Seeing people come together, feel included, and genuinely enjoy themselves.

If you would like to be part of days like this or learn more about what we do, send us a message.

Wishing you all a very happy Easter filled with love, joy, and a few special treats 💛
