The scales don’t always reflect what’s really happening in your body.

At Sage Active Clinic, we use InBody body composition scans to measure things that matter, including muscle mass, body fat and how your body is changing over time.

This information helps our Exercise Physiologists:
• track progress accurately
• guide safe, effective exercise programs
• support strength, balance and independence as we age

For many people, especially over 50, progress is about maintaining muscle and function, not chasing a number on the scales.

Why fear of falling affects movement

Fear of falling doesn’t just increase anxiety – it can quietly change how people move.

Research shows that when people are worried about falling, they often:
• move more stiffly
• reduce walking speed
• avoid everyday activities

Over time, this protective behaviour can reduce strength, balance and confidence, which may actually increase fall risk.

Exercise Physiologists work with people to rebuild confidence through safe, supported movement and gradual exposure to everyday tasks.

Small, appropriate exercise can make a meaningful difference to independence and safety.

Many grandparents are more involved than ever in caring for their grandchildren.

That means staying strong enough to lift, walk, balance and keep up — safely and confidently.

Exercise physiology focuses on maintaining the strength, balance and mobility that support everyday life.

Because staying active helps you keep doing the things that matter most.

Muscle mass and independence

Research consistently shows that low muscle mass and strength increase the risk of losing independence as we age.

What matters most isn’t muscle size alone, but the combination of:

* muscle mass
* muscle strength
* functional ability (such as walking speed or standing from a chair)

Together, these factors are strong predictors of whether someone can live independently and safely.

Exercise Physiologists assess both body composition and functional strength to build a clearer picture of risk and guide appropriate exercise programs.

Staying strong isn’t about training harder — it’s about training appropriately.

Home visits – who they’re for and why they matter

For some people, exercising in a clinic isn’t the right place to start.

Home visits can be particularly helpful for people who are recovering from illness, surgery or injury.
For those living with a chronic condition.
For people who feel unsteady or lack confidence getting out.
And for those supporting a partner or family member at home.

They are also commonly used by people accessing services through My Aged Care, DVA, and in many cases the NDIS, where exercising at home can be safer and more practical.

During a home visit, an Exercise Physiologist assesses how you move in your own environment and designs an exercise program that fits your space, daily activities and goals.

Home visits focus on safety, confidence and helping people stay active and independent at home.

Why we assess before designing your exercise program
So your exercise program matches your health and ability from the start.

At Sage Active Clinic, exercise is never one size fits all.

Before recommending any exercises, we take the time to understand your medical history, any injuries or chronic conditions, and your current capacity.

Much of this happens through discussion, observation and simple movement checks.

This helps us design an exercise program that supports safety, confidence and long-term progress.

If you are attending with a GP referral, this assessment also helps ensure your program aligns with any medical advice and funding requirements.

Book via the link in our bio or message us if you have questions.

Hip or lower back discomfort is more common than many people realise, especially if you sit for long periods.

This gentle stretch is often used to help ease tension around the hip and lower back. It can be done on the floor or on a bed, and should feel comfortable, not painful.

If hip or lower back pain is ongoing, our Exercise Physiologists can assess what’s contributing and guide you with a personalised plan.
