Are you exercising for your brain?

Research has shown that being physically active after the age of 65 reduces your risk of developing dementia by up to 20%. Exercise supports increased blood flow and oxygen supply to the brain and stimulates the growth of new brain cells. Aside from benefits to your grey matter, exercise also reduces risk of falls, and can help improve sleep; further improving your mental wellbeing. Start with a few minutes a day of either aerobic exercise, weight training or flexibility/balance exercises, and build up to 30 minutes a day.

Tibialis raises are good for strengthening your tibialis anterior muscle, which is located on the front of your shin. This exercise improves balance, ankle stability, and foot mechanics, and it helps prevent injuries like shin splints by reducing knee and shin load. Tibialis raises also enhance deceleration, which supports better athletic performance in activities like running and jumping. If you suffer from shin splints or experience pain with this exercise, book an appointment with an EP at Sage Active Clinic.

Today is World Mental Health Day!

Mental health is complicated and can be affected by a variety of factors. One factor that can contribute is your level of activity. Physical activity offers significant benefits for mental health by reducing stress and anxiety, improving mood and sleep, and boosting cognitive function and self-esteem. It works by releasing "feel-good" chemicals like endorphins, improving blood flow to the brain, providing a positive distraction, and fostering social connections. The recommended guideline is at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity per week, which can include a variety of enjoyable activities, even household tasks, and should be started gradually.

If you are struggling with your mental health, seeking some help or having a chat with someone close to you can be a good start!

Stuck somewhere with nowhere to sit?

Wall sits increase muscular endurance and joint stability in a squatting position. For this exercise, imagine there is an invisible chair against a wall, and sit on that chair. Push your back into the wall and maintain this seated position for as long as possible. To make it more challenging, you can place a heavy object on your thighs as you do the exercise. If you get pain when sitting for long periods or have trouble getting in and out of a chair, get in touch and book an appointment with an accredited Exercise Physiologist at Sage.

Test your hip strength with this exercise!

The hip stabilisers, such as the gluteus medius, play a crucial role in stabilising the hips as you walk and go up and down stairs. If these muscles are weak, it can lead to pain and changes in gait, which can then lead to difficulty walking and climbing stairs. When performing the exercise, focus on keeping your hip level on both sides and slow the movement down. The slower you do the movement, the more challenging it is.

We spend a lot of time on computers and looking at screens. If done for prolonged periods, this can cause discomfort and pain in the neck, particularly in the suboccipital muscles (located at the back of your head, at the base of the skull) and the upper trapezius muscle (a large muscle on your upper back). Do 2-3 sets of 10 slow rotations in each direction.
