Leaking happens because pregnancy and birth can stretch and weaken your pelvic floor muscles. Ignoring it can sometimes lead to worsening symptoms over time, discomfort, or impact on confidence and daily activities.

Things that can help include:
• Gentle pelvic floor exercises
• Learning how to activate your muscles correctly
• Understanding posture and lifting techniques that reduce pressure on your pelvic floor

Remember, experiencing some leakage might just mean your pelvic floor needs some support to recover.

Fact - Stopping the flow of urine is not a safe or reliable way to test your pelvic floor strength.

Why?
It can actually confuse your bladder’s normal emptying reflex, and it doesn’t measure endurance, coordination or relaxation, which are all important parts of pelvic floor function. Doing it regularly may even lead to incomplete emptying or bladder irritation.

A proper pelvic floor assessment with a physio is the safest way to understand how your muscles are working. Remember, pelvic floor isn’t about strength. It’s about balance, control and function.

Repetitive high-impact activity, like running, jumping or heavy lifting, increases pressure on the pelvic floor. Up to 80% of female athletes report stress urinary incontinence.

Many women experience urinary leakage with coughing, sneezing, laughing, or exercising. This often occurs when the pelvic floor muscles aren’t providing enough support to the pelvic organs and bladder.

For men, urinary incontinence and reduced bladder control are common after prostate surgery (prostatectomy).

EMSELLA offers a simple and effective solution for both women and men. Most people benefit from a series of six sessions, each lasting less than half an hour. Head to our website to learn more about the EMSELLA treatment and how it could help you, or give our team a call to chat with one of our experienced physios.
