If you’re an Australian resident aged 45-49 ( or 40+ years old with a high risk of developing Type 2 diabetes) and have risk factors and family history of chronic disease, you may be eligible for the subsidised health assessment.
To be eligible for the health check, your GP needs to identify at least one risk factor. Risk factors are based on:
- family history of chronic disease.
- blood pressure, cholesterol, or blood sugar levels.
- weight and diet.
- history of smoking.
- alcohol intake.
- exercise habits.
If you’re eligible for the health assessment, it is bulk billed.
What does the 45-49 health assessment involve?
As part of the health assessment, you need to see a nurse first for 45 minutes to discuss:
- Lifestyle (diet, exercise, smoking, and drinking).
- Signs of skin cancer.
- Mental health condition.
Family history of chronic disease.
Any concerns you may have regarding your health
They may also measure the following:
- Weight and height.
- Blood pressure.
- ECG
Assess the need for preventative health care such as
- Cervical screening tests
- Fasting blood tests
- Mammograms
- Faecal occult blood testing
- Skin cancer screening
- Prostate cancer screening
- Vision and hearing screening
- immunisation
Calculate:
- Risk of diabetes.
- Risk of fracture related to osteoporosis (women 45+ years).
- Cardiovascular risk.
If you feel you are at a healthy point in your life, this can be the best time to go and see your doctor. Additionally, health checks often include bloodwork and other screening tests. Even though you may feel healthy, some of these tests may indicate otherwise.
