Jaana sees singing and dance as gateways into remembering what it is to be human. For her, they are the places where the body can lead, guiding into compassion, love and connection with the Earth.
She first fell in love with singing through choirs and the traditional Finnish and Celtic folk songs she discovered in high school. Her longtime inspirations are women and mothers of storytelling, particularly Laura Marling, Missy Higgins, Joni Mitchell and Eva Cassidy. After a long pause, sharing her voice has become a tender and ongoing journey with friends and family, unpacking layers of shame and suppression that so many of us carry and learning to meet the vulnerability of being heard.
The ancient call of song was sparked to life again for Jaana through sister circles, choirs, fireside singing, time by the creek and the freedom of ecstatic dance and contact improvisation. These spaces remind her that song touches a primal part of us that words alone cannot reach.
Each time she sings, Jaana aims to show up honestly and vulnerably, sharing parts of herself that root her in her own humanity, whilst inviting others to feel more of theirs. Through melody and rhythm, she weaves story, wisdom and connection.
