Rule of thumb: When in doubt, PAWS!

Recently, someone I work with was phished, and it reminded me how easily these scams can catch anyone. Scammers often pretend to be trusted brands, like Fiji Airways, with fake prizes ($2,000!) to trick you. This is a phishing attempt called a spoofed giveaway scam.

These scams often prey on people who click too fast, get excited by a “free prize,” or don’t take a moment to check carefully. it can happen to anyone.

How to stay safe:
✅ Check the domain – official Fiji Airways is fijiairways.com. Any .xyz or random letters = suspicious.
🔒 Look for HTTPS – a padlock isn’t enough, but no padlock is a red flag. (Deep dive post coming!)
✏️ Check spelling – scammers use tiny tweaks like extra letters or dashes.
🔀 Watch redirects – if the link jumps to strange sites, don’t continue.
❌ Too good to be true – big prizes for a simple survey are almost always fake.

Rule of thumb: When in doubt, always check the official site or contact the company directly.

So here’s Cyber Cat’s advice:

🚫 No banking
🚫 No logging in
🚫 No personal info
✅ If you really must, use a VPN.

Or better yet, wait till you’re on your home or mobile network.
If it’s not your network, treat it like it’s not your litter box.
