Nominations for the 2026 RACGP Awards are open, and today we're celebrating Dr Ai Lee Heng, winner of the 2025 Standing Strong Together Award.

Dr Heng is a registrar and busy mother of three, working full-time alongside her husband, also a GP. After transitioning from another specialty, she found that general practice offered the work–family–life balance she was seeking, as well as a career path full of opportunities.

At First Peoples' Health and Wellbeing in Victoria, Dr Heng provides culturally grounded care, recognising that First Nations health encompasses physical, social, emotional, cultural and spiritual wellbeing.

'This achievement has inspired me to reach higher, dream bigger and never stop learning,' she says. 'It is not just an award. It is time, effort and team excellence made visible.'

For Dr Heng, the most rewarding part of general practice is the long-term relationships she builds with her patients and the ability to provide holistic care.

Her advice to anyone considering nominating a colleague for an RACGP Award? 'Just go for it. If you think they deserve the award, they truly do.'

Award nominations close 9.00 am (AEST) Monday 1 June.

Hear first-hand how Health Workforce Queensland’s Going Rural North student bursary is helping university health students take their studies beyond the classroom and into remote Queensland.

In this interview with ABC North West Queensland occupational therapist, Erin Weekes, shares how rural placements across Queensland sparked her passion for outback practice. With financial support, Erin gained hands-on experience living, studying and working in remote and rural communities, and is now based in Mount Isa as a fully qualified Occupational Therapist.

The North West is reaping the benefits of a program helping health students take the leap into rural life 👩‍⚕️🌄

Mount Isa occupational therapist Erin Weekes is one of them, now living and working in the city after a rural placement cemented her desire to work in the regions.

The Going Rural North bursary supports nursing, midwifery, allied health and dentistry students 🏥with travel and accommodation costs while they complete placements across regional North Queensland, including places like the Cape, Cairns, Richmond and Charters Towers.

Eligible students can receive up to $200 a week, helping ease the financial pressure of unpaid placements 💸

Ms Weeks said that support made all the difference when she took up a nine-week placement in Weipa.

“I absolutely loved it… I said, I want to get more out of placement and I can get that in another rural setting,” she said.

“As a uni student… nine weeks of no income is quite a lot… the bursary really enabled me to not think about those stresses as much."

📍Now based in Mount Isa, she said those rural experiences shaped her career.

“If you told me in my first year… that I’d be working and living in Mount Isa, I probably would have laughed,” she said.

“But these experiences are so valuable… I saw how needed healthcare is in rural communities… and how much of a difference you can make.” ❤️

🤝The Going Rural North bursary is delivered by Health Workforce Queensland, in partnership with the Northern Queensland Primary Health Network.

International Nurses Day

Did you know there are more than 467,000 nurses in Australia, making up the largest segment of the health workforce? Yet by 2035, Australia is projected to face a shortfall of 70,707 nurses. Now is the time to invest in nursing to help meet our nation’s growing healthcare needs.

A special thank you to all the nurses working across remote, rural and regional Queensland for the care, passion and dedication you show your communities every day.
