After a terribly written policy, I would like to apologise to the Assistance Dog community.

I was trying to juggle so many different things with this policy that I forgot my own policy of the KISS principle. I worded V1.0 like any other workplace policy, forgetting that this isn’t like any other policy. My intent was to make things easier and more comfortable for both sides of the fence, and I failed at that. I’m the first to admit my mistake, and below we have our revised policy.

Assistance Dogs V2.0

We kindly ask, as a courtesy, that if you are bringing your Assistance dog, you let us know. Particularly if you have any special requests, e.g., seating, etc, this is to ensure we can make reasonable adjustments to our training, operations, classroom, etc., to accommodate your request. Requests on the day may not be achievable. If this is the case, we will reschedule you to another date, but we will do everything we can to avoid this.

This is also a perfect time, again as a courtsey, to let us know that if you have a medical support dog, what to do if you have an episode. For example, what to do for your condition, assistance with medication, call an ambulance, etc. Only the trainer will be told this information to protect your privacy and dignity. This will help us to provide the best care possible.

If you have a request for the venue, we encourage you to contact them directly with your request. All our venues can be found within each state's directory on our website.

The above is a courtesy, NOT A REQUIREMENT to attend class.

Please note: No first aid training can be conducted on your Assistance dog - If they are there to work, then they are there to work. No exceptions. No other dogs will be in class (except assistance dogs), as we use manikins for training.

You must at all times have the animal under effective control.

You may be requested by us or the venue for evidence that it is an assistance animal and that it is trained to appropriate hygiene/behaviour standards; if that evidence is not produced, you may be refused entry into the classroom/venue.

There is never a "normal" day in policing!

Earlier today, emergency services responded to a snake bite victim in Lawson bushland, which ended with the patient being airlifted in a satisfactory condition.

While police and ambulance were conducting a debrief for this task, a woman approached our emergency service workers in a distressed condition, concerned that her dog had become lost in the bush.

A search was commenced, with the dog located down a small ravine, requiring Blue Mountains Police Rescue - NSW Police Force to absail and recover the uninjured dog - which was placed in a back pack for the climb back to the top.

Police were able to return the happy hound to its owner, marking the end of a interesting deployment!

Our Story

Dog First Aid Australia is a quality based Australian business providing Emergency Solutions, Training and Products for Canines and Handlers. We currently serve Government, Commercial, Industry and Private Sectors.

Our Dog First Aid course originally started back in 2006 when Bossman ran Blue Dog K9 Services (BDK9S), a security dog company based in Brisbane. It was offered as staff training. It was designed after Bossman’s dog fell 2 stories down an elevator shaft that wasn’t covered up by construction workers.

In 2016 Dog First Aid Australia (DFAA) was started after Bossman attended a dog first aid course in Brisbane and realised how old and poor the training was by other providers. Since this time DFAA has become in industry provider of up to date information, techniques and skills for Dog First Aid.
