Supporting Pacific Wellbeing in the Riverina 🇼🇸 🇦🇺

Our team had the privilege of facilitating Introduction to Mental Health sessions with Samoan PALM workers in Young and Cootamundra this month.

Through open talanoa, reflection, and laughter, we explored ways to recognise and care for our mental wellbeing while away from home. It’s been uplifting to be a part of initiatives that strengthens the community that supports our Samoan brothers and sisters through their PALM journey’s in Australia.

Thank you and fa’afetai tele lava to everyone who joined the conversation. Your voices and stories continue to shape how we support PALM workers across the regions. 🌺

Advocating for the Mental health of PALM workers at the AAPS 2025 🗣️🌺

Earlier this month, Sema Wellbeing’s Senior Clinician Zachary Schuster and Dr. Lute Faleolo of Latrobe University presented at the AAPS Conference at the University of Sydney! 🎓

Together with Valami Waqaliva, Director of Sema Wellbeing, they co-developed a presentation on the holistic wellbeing of Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) workers 💬🧠

This platform was utelised to advocate for culturally tailored mental health support—designed and led by Pacific professionals—and emphasised the need for more research to ensure PALM workers’ voices are reflected in policy and services 📊📚

🌊 It was a privilege to have been a part of The Oceania Pacific Health Association (OPHA) Conference on the Gold Coast last Friday to present on “Niu Waves: Labour Mobility, Seasonal Work, and Safety,” where our focus was on enhancing mental health support for PALM (Pacific Australia Labour Mobility) scheme workers.

Presented by our Senior Mental Health Clinician, Zachary Schuster, our session highlighted the critical need for comprehensive mental health resources culturally tailored to the unique experiences of PALM workers. Engaging with fellow Pacific leaders and practitioners allowed us to explore innovative strategies and share insights on how we can better support our PALM and Pacific communities.

Being amongst such excellence and collective knowledge reinforced our commitment to fostering a supportive environment for PALM workers, ensuring their wellbeing is prioritised as they navigate their work and life in Australia.
Vinaka Vakalevu and Fa’afetai tele lava to Dr. Kuinileti Chang Wai, Dr Eta Raicebe, Dr Matt Bray and the OPHA team for creating this platform for our Pacific people’s.

Together, we are making strides towards strengthening our communities and creating lasting positive change. Thank you to everyone who participated and contributed to this important talanoa! 🐚 🌺

Today is R U OK? Day 2024 in Australia, a reminder that checking in on someone’s mental health isn’t just for today—it’s for every day. At Sema Wellbeing, we understand how powerful a simple conversation can be, particularly for our Pacific communities where relationship, connection and care are at the heart of our values.

Asking ‘Are you OK?’ opens the door to meaningful conversations and helps break the silence around mental health. It’s a way to show someone you care and encourage them to talk openly about their struggles. Remember, your support could be the step that helps someone seek the help they need.

Let’s keep the conversation going, today and every day.

Exciting Announcement: Launch of Our Culturally Tailored Online Course for Frontline staff 💻🧠🌏 💛

We are thrilled to unveil our latest initiative – a culturally tailored online course designed specifically for frontline workers engaging daily with PALM (Pacific Australia Labour Mobility) workers.

Developed with the invaluable support of nib Group and Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) scheme, this course focuses on fostering understanding, empathy, and effective communication skills tailored to the unique cultural contexts of PALM workers.

The feedback from our early participants, comprising PALM Approved employers, has been overwhelmingly positive. They've highlighted how the course has equipped them with the necessary skills and knowledge to support the mental health of their PALM workers more effectively.

Understanding the challenges of attending face-to-face sessions, we have made our workshops fully accessible online with downloadable resource. This flexibility allows participants to complete the course at their own pace, from any location, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to benefit from this valuable resource.

This course will be officially launched in January 2024. For more information or to express your interest, please feel free to email our team.
