This tweak, discovered by researchers at the University of Copenhagen, diluted brown eyes to blue and connects millions back to a single ancestor from about 10,000 years ago. Whether you’re in Europe, America, or anywhere else, that little change is part of your DNA today. Dr. Hans Eiberg’s team found that all blue-eyed individuals carry the same genetic switch, making it a direct legacy from an ancient individual. How cool is that?

Ain’t that the truth. 🤣

In all seriousness, though, it was quite common for Old Believers to disown a family member who left the faith or joined another church or faction or married someone outside of the Starover community.

“I appeal to you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and create obstacles contrary to the doctrine that you have been taught; avoid them.” Romans 16:17

This sentiment in the Bible was used to quite literally ex-communicate family members, so as not to be tempted by them into sin as well. This practice still exists in some Old Believer communities today who do not allow outsiders into their fold, even if they are related by blood.

This week I connected a long lost teenager to her Old Believer family after being separated in Manchuria and searching for them until her dying day. May she now rest in peace with our ancestors thanks to the work of her descendants.

A lovely blog with photos of a ship that many Old Believer elders may recognize. The MV Tegelberg travelled from Hong Kong to Rio De Janeiro, Brazil: a 42 day, 10,660 nautical mile crossing of two seas (South China and the Andaman) and two oceans (Indian and South Atlantic). Many Russian Old Believers who left Manchuria , China, for Paraguay and Brazil (and eventually USA and Canada) travelled by this boat around 1958-1962. I am discovering their names on manifests as I search ancestral UNRO records and connect family trees.

Someone wrote that all great stories begin with the sea. And if they didn’t, they should have. Whether in Micronesian balsa-wood rafts crossing the Pacific or Portuguese caravelas crawling …
