Group knee rehab sessions (+ .mikaio

I absolutely hated when I used to do 30minute, 1 on 1 sessions with athletes (traditional physio model)

It just feels mundane and it’s often not enjoyable from the athletes standpoint.

Rehab can be a real grind, especially when you’re doing it on your own. Once I stopped the traditional 30 minute 1on1 sessions, there was a huge uptake in rehab completion rates

When you’re training alongside other athletes, the whole process just feels lighter and more enjoyable overall….Rather than just having your Physio stand there watching you do your rehab, trying to make small talk to kill silences

We obviously have our 1 on 1 time with our athletes (Testing sessions, or if we really need to hone in on some technique for particular athletes). And the group rehab or performance scene isn’t for everyone. There are those who prefer the more traditional 30minute Physio session once a fortnight type thing (rub the leg, put a heat pack on, give 2-3 exercises…)

At the end of the day, athletes are used to training in team environments, and that’s something we’ve really tried to bring into our rehab setting

Big day at Davies

And a pretty special day for this young man

First in-season game back in a very long time. And held his own 💪

Been a pleasure to be involved in this journey. Big things ahead for this up and comer

And an honourable mention to the Prior twins , our newest recruits. First time seeing them in action. Being a part of these young athletes development is quite a privilege and I’m bloody keen to see what they can do this year

And lastly…..my girls first day at the footy 🥹 the first of many. She was a tad rattled by some unhinged parents in the stands ( ), some early exposure is how I see it

Stress reaction rehab ✅

This makes me happy

I have ptsd from my earlier days of physio, seeing young athletes with a stress reaction or stress fracture go through a small stints of rehab, only to then go back and end up with a much more severe reaction or fracture

I never treat these as small issues, give 2 or 3 exercises, see them again 2 weeks later - repeat that process for 8 weeks or so….thats rubbish

These can be complex. Load has to be tracked, suboptimal mechanics (particularly running and change of direction) should be addressed. And we need STRENGTH. Brute strength to tolerate load and the demands of sport

That takes time and a diligent rehab/strength and conditioning approach

Put in the work and reap the rewards….and the rewards here are a significantly reduced likelihood of injury recurrence. And a nice side effect of better performance. Always nice when you come out of rehab performing better than you were before your injury

Proud of this young man he’s come a long way 💪

This isn’t a strength test.

It’s a power calibration test.

The Keiser 6-rep test determines an athlete’s KOPR — Keiser Optimal Power Resistance. This is the exact resistance where they produce their highest power output.

Too light, and there isn’t enough force.
Too heavy, and movement slows down.
KOPR finds the sweet spot where force and velocity combine to produce maximal power.

Once we identify this resistance, we can:

• Measure true peak power output
• Track progress objectively over time
• Prescribe power training at the optimal load
• Ensure athletes are improving performance — not just lifting heavier

This allows us to individualise training and track what actually matters for sport: power.
