Brothers Cooking Classes | Week 1
Building Confidence and Connection
We kicked off our Brothers Cooking Class series at our headquarters this month, led by one of our own Brothers who is a qualified chef.
Week one focused on introductions, safety, and setting the tone for the classes. Everyone felt included, heard, and supported, with each participant having a voice in decision-making. Brothers supported their participants throughout the process, allowing the session to flow naturally without being overbearing. This approach strongly reflected our value of mateship, working side-by-side as equals.
What we made
• Burgers made completely from scratch
• Rocky road slice
Participants worked through the full process of forming burger patties, learning how to judge doneness and cook safely. Onion was intentionally included to observe knife skills and safety awareness. Everyone did extremely well, no cuts, no burns, and plenty of learning moments along the way.
For dessert, the group made rocky road slice using containers they could take home. Participants learned how to safely melt chocolate, with Brothers guiding decisions such as tearing marshmallows rather than using them whole.
Challenges
Budgeting and knife safety were early focus areas. One moment required clear reinforcement of knife safety, which participants immediately respected and responded to positively.
Key takeaway
While initial menu options felt overwhelming, participants were gently guided toward meals they enjoyed. By stepping back and allowing participants and Brothers to problem-solve together, it became clear this space is best participant-led. One participant confidently suggested chicken satay stir fry for the following week, showing early ownership and growth.
