May is Crohn’s & Colitis Awareness Month, an opportunity to raise IBD awareness and shine a spotlight on the cost of diagnosis delays 💜

According to , “more than 1 in 10 people reported it took more than 5 years to get a diagnosis” and once diagnosed, “41% took more than 5 years before their IBD symptoms were under control”.

This means that it can take up to *10 YEARS* to receive a diagnosis and achieve remission 🤯

That’s an incredibly long time to be unwell, misdiagnosed, and often dismissed…

If you suspect you have IBD, here are the symptoms to look out for:
• Abdominal pain
• Bloating
• Gas
• Changes in bowel habits (often diarrhoea)
• Blood or mucus in the stool
• Fatigue and brain fog
• Weight loss

If you can share this post to your story or with a friend, it would be very much appreciated 🙏

By spreading awareness and educating others about IBD and its symptoms, we can hopefully shorten the time to diagnosis and reduce the time it takes to reach remission.

As an IBD dietitian, I can advocate for you to get the necessary tests to confirm or rule out an IBD diagnosis. I can also help prevent disease progression and support remission.

So, if this sounds like what you need, please feel free to send me a message or click the link in my bio to book an appointment.

I think did a pretty great job 🥹

But for a little extra context 👇

What do I do for work?
I’m a dietitian (and nutritionist) living with Crohn’s Disease who exclusively supports people living with IBD 💛

What’s the difference between Crohn’s Disease (CD) and Ulcerative Colitis (UC)?
Both are forms of IBD and can cause similar symptoms. As mentioned, CD can affect any part of the digestive tract (from the mouth to the a**s), whereas UC is limited to the large intestine (colon and re**um). Another key difference is that CD can affect the full thickness of the bowel wall, whereas UC affects only the inner lining of the colon.

How many plant foods should we aim for each week?
Research shows that people who eat at least 30 different plant foods each week have a healthier and more diverse gut microbiome 🙌

How many times should we chew each mouthful?
Chewing our food 20-30 times can aid digestion and nutrient absorption.

What is the difference between a dietitian and a nutritionist?
A dietitian is a regulated health professional qualified to provide medical nutrition therapy, whereas a nutritionist is a broader term, often unregulated, so qualifications and scope of practice can vary.

Let us know in the comments below whether we should do a part 2! If so, what should I ask him next?

Did you know that coconut water can help lower inflammation, improve the gut microbiome, and support electrolyte balance?

A relatively new study published in Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology found that when used alongside standard medical therapy, coconut water nearly doubled remission rates in people with mild to moderate Ulcerative Colitis.

It’s important to note this isn’t a cure and we absolutely need larger studies. But coconut water is a simple, low risk and accessible strategy that might be worth experimenting, alongside your standard medical therapy.
