Our doctors and sonographers have extensive experience in scanning twins and multiple pregnancies.

The first trimester is the best time to determine the chorionicity (number of placentas) and amnionicity (number of gestational sacs). ✨

Mono = one
Di = two

This information is extremely important for the management of the pregnancy, including the timing of follow up scans and increased surveillance, particularly in monochorionic twin pregnancies where the babies are sharing the placenta, for conditions such as TTTS (Twin-Twin transfusion syndrome).

Dichorionic Diamniotic (DCDA) twins have their own separate placentas (may appear close together or ‘fused’) and their own separate gestational sacs.
This is a little bit like having their own bedrooms and their own kitchens.

In a Monochorionic Diamniotic (MCDA) twin pregnancy, there is one placenta (chorion) and two separate gestational sacs (amnion). This can be compared to having their own separate bedrooms, but share the kitchen.

In Monochorionic Monoamniotic (MCMA) twins, they share the placenta and have one gestational sac…so they share the kitchen and have one bedroom.

How did you go with guessing the type of twin? 🌟

During your ultrasound scan, our skilled sonographers carefully examine your baby’s heart to ensure everything is developing as it should.

The heart is one of the most complex organs in the body, and we take special care to assess its structure and function.🫀

If any abnormalities are detected, our doctors will discuss the results with you on the same day and ensure your managing clinician is informed. In some cases, a more detailed fetal echocardiography scan may be recommended, which will be performed by a specialist fetal or paediatric cardiologist at a tertiary hospital.

Your baby’s health is our priority, and we are here to support you through every step of the journey.💙

What is Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS)?

CVS is a diagnostic test available to detect chromosomal abnormalities such as Down syndrome (Trisomy 21) in the unborn baby & can be performed between 11-14 weeks.

It is more commonly offered to patients who are considered to be at increased risk of chromosomal problems.

Some reasons for an increased risk of chromosomal problems include:

✻ If the first trimester nuchal translucency screen showed an increased risk
✻ A high-probability NIPT
✻ Genetic conditions e.g. Fragile X, Cystic fibrosis or others
✻ If a previous baby had a chromosomal abnormality

CVS involves inserting a fine needle through the maternal abdominal wall under ultrasound guidance (under sterile conditions) into the uterus in order to obtain a small sample of the placenta (called chorionic villi).

The procedure itself often only takes approximately 10-15 mins. However, we ask patients to allow 1 - 1.5 hours for the pre-scan and procedure.
