Your brain (motherboard of the nervous system) needs to feel safe otherwise your fight or flight nervous system will be activated think youโ€™re adrenal glands). Not feeling safe (real or perceived threat - the brain canโ€™t tell the difference) can lead the nervous system to misinterpret or amplify pain in an attempted to protect you from โ€œthreatโ€.

This question, simple yet confronting. I encourage you to give yourself 5 mins (can be less) to sit down and honestly ask yourself this.
*hot tip - journaling can help to get the thoughts flowing (yes I know it may sound tedious or lame but how can you knock it if you havenโ€™t tried it).

Solution? = schedule in some SMALL acts of self care so they can be frequent (5mins) and 1 larger fun activity so that I can bench my โ€œworriesโ€ and emerge myself in joy.

Who has sore shoulders up to their neck? This is such a common complaint. Especially with our mobile/laptop/couch habits! Here is something you can do seated or standing to help you ease tension

๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿผtake one hand behind your back towards the other side of your body & clasp that hand with your other hand
๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿผpinch the shoulder blade (of the arm wrapping behind you)towards the spine, then drop that shoulder down away from you ear
๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿผlook down towards your hands

You should feel a nice stretch along the top of the shoulder of the arm wrapping around the body.

Breathe and hold for 20-30seconds ** it shouldnโ€™t be painful, it should feel like a stretch

Who loves dry needling? Lots of you do!

Dry needling is just one of the tools in the toolbox that can be used as part of your treatment.

I personally love it as you can have such a target response over such a large area at once compared to what I could achieve through massage.

These needles are 23 times thinner than a blood test needle so they are small.

The research shows many positive outcomes from needling.
๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿผmuscle relaxation (decreased tone)
๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿผchanges it fascial tension (connective tissue)
๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿผincrease blood flow to the area
๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿผeliciting a tissue repair response
* also for those that have had it before and it hurt like nobodies business because it made the muscle painfully twitch, the research also shows that itโ€™s not essential to obtain that response for the beneficial effects so I try to make it as pain free as I can and avoid it :)

At the risk of losing your attention Iโ€™ll explain the two theories of how these beneficial effects happen in a simplified version.
A) the pain or trauma ended up causing motor neurons to get stuck on sort of a reflex loop (reflex arc) to โ€œguard, guard, guardโ€ or โ€œcontract, contract, contractโ€. The needle is a small but large enough stimulation to break the reflex arc, kind of like short circuiting it so that the muscle can relax.

B) a muscle in constant spasm becomes damaged. Spasm reduces blood flow = less nutrients and oxygen to the muscle = fibres die off = increase in scar tissue = which holds the muscle in a tense state = a continuation of the above thus pain and tension. Putting the needles in these spots of the muscles cause it to relax (can be seen under elctromyogram ).
