True role model
Congratulations!!
We are thrilled to post that the 2023 Young Australian of the Year is none other than the incredibly inspiring Awer Mabil! Not only is he a talented Socceroo player, but he also dedicates his time to making a positive impact off the field through his not-for-profit organisation, Barefoot to Boots.
Growing up in a Kenyan refugee camp before coming to Australia at the age of 10, Mabil's passion for promoting better health, education and gender equality for refugees stems from his own personal experiences. The South Sudanese Australian knows firsthand the difficulties that come with not having access to basic resources, like sporting equipment, which is why Barefoot to Boots is so close to his heart. The organisation provides these essential resources to refugees so they can have the same opportunities he did to play and learn through sports.
Even with all of his success on the field, Mabil has faced personal struggles. A year after fulfilling his dream of playing for the Socceroos, his sister tragically passed away in a car accident. Through this difficult time, Mabil discovered a strength within himself that he didn't know he had. He feels "unbreakable" now and uses the memory of his sister to continue pushing forward and making a difference in the lives of others.
Mabil is not only a role model on the field, but off it as well. He wants to use his platform to raise awareness and encourage open discussions about mental health, and let others know they are not alone in their struggles. He is truly an inspiration and we are honored to have him as the 2023 Young Australian of the Year.
