Our General Manager, Katie Grice, will be joining the panel at the upcoming ESSA Medicolegal Conference in partnership with Maurice Blackburn Lawyers this August. She will contribute alongside health and legal experts to unpack a complex case study, exploring both clinical and legal perspectives.
Katie will be presenting on the occupational therapy lens across both the treatment phase and the common law phase of a claim. Her focus? The real-world functional impact of injury, and how OT supports recovery, participation, and evidence-building once a client is stable and stationary.
She’ll explore:
🔹 The role of treating OT in the statutory phase (WorkCover & CTP crossover)
🔹 Key OT considerations beyond return to work, including psychosocial barriers and participation
🔹 The role of the medicolegal OT in the common law phase, including functional capacity evaluation, care needs, and economic loss assessment
Looking forward to seeing Katie represent MLEA in such a cross-disciplinary space.

Comfort, connection, and a moment to slow down, that’s what we’re all about.
This week, we embraced a little lightness at MLEA with our very own Stress Down Day! Complete with pyjamas, slippers, oodies, and an abundance of baked goods.
It also happened to coincide with the first of our new Team Break Tuesdays, a fortnightly lunch tradition inspired by our staffs’ suggestions at our recent Strategy Day.
These moments aren’t just feel-good extras, they’re intentional steps toward a workplace culture that values wellbeing, connection, and balance.
Because sometimes, showing up for each other means slowing down together.

“Needs prompting” isn’t a small thing — it’s a functional support need.
Prompting is often misunderstood as a simple reminder — but it can be a critical support for people with cognitive or psychosocial disabilities.
Prompting can include:
🔹 Verbal cues or scripts
🔹 Visual schedules or step-by-step guides
🔹 Physical presence to initiate or stay on task
🔹 Supervision for safety or redirection
When someone needs prompting to shower, take medication, or complete basic tasks, it’s a clear indicator that support is needed — even if they don’t require physical assistance.
At MLEA, we document prompting needs clearly in our NDIS reports so support coordinators and planners understand the why, not just the what.
👉 Want help explaining how prompting fits into support needs? We're always happy to collaborate on cases.

This week, our Medicolegal OT Team Leader Mia, OT Juliette, and ML Client Services Officer Callie headed to Trilby Misso Lawyers in Brisbane to deliver a tailored education session on the role of OT in the medicolegal space.
At MLEA, we’re big believers in collaboration and shared learning. These sessions are all about supporting legal teams to better understand how occupational therapy assessments can contribute to fair, evidence-based outcomes in personal injury and insurance matters.
By building stronger connections between the health and legal sectors, we can ensure the evidence provided is not just clinically sound, but meaningful and useful to the people relying on it.
Thanks to the team at Trilby Misso for having us!
If your firm is interested in a session (in person or virtual), we’d love to hear from you.

This NAIDOC Week, MLEA Occupational Therapy proudly honours the culture, strength, vision, and legacy of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
The 2025 theme, “The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy,” acknowledges the enduring legacy of Elders past and present, while celebrating the future — shaped by the resilience, leadership, and determination of the next generation of First Nations voices.
We celebrate the deep connection to Country and reflect on the knowledge, traditions, languages, and stories that continue to guide communities today and into the future.
As allied health professionals working on the lands of the Turrbal and Jagera peoples in Woolloongabba, Queensland, we remain committed to fostering culturally safe, inclusive, and respectful healthcare practices. We strive to incorporate Indigenous perspectives into our work and support the self-determination, strength, and vision of First Nations clients and communities.
We are privileged to learn from the oldest continuous cultures on earth and are committed to walking alongside First Nations peoples. Listening, learning, and contributing to a legacy of respect, opportunity, and culturally safe care.
We pay our respects to Elders past and present and extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Artwork Acknowledgement: We acknowledge and thank the late Gordon Landsen Milyindirri, a proud Gudanji man from Borroloola in the Gulf of Carpentaria, Northern Territory, whose artwork features in this design. Gordon’s language is Yanyuwa. His paintings beautifully reflect his billabong story, the hills of Nayawooda (the Lost City), Mulloogera bush Country, and the desert landscapes- sharing the knowledge passed down from his great-grandfather. Through his art, Gordon preserves and shares the stories of Country, culture, and connection, ensuring the next generation continues to learn, respect, and care for the land.

There’s no one “right” session length in paediatric OT, just what’s right for your child.
Some days they may be ready to climb, play, and regulate for an hour. Other days, 30 minutes might be more effective. That’s okay.
At MLEA, we individualise therapy times to align with attention, readiness, and the goals at hand - and we’re transparent with parents every step of the way.
Because the goal isn’t a time slot. It’s meaningful progress.

"Support needs” aren’t just about the hours, they’re about how the support fits into life.
It’s easy to focus on the number of hours a person might need for daily support. But hours alone don’t tell the full story.
In OT, we look at how support needs show up and why. Two people might both need four hours a day, but one might need physical assistance with mobility, while the other needs someone nearby to prompt, cue, and supervise for safety.
At MLEA, our NDIS reports break down these nuances. We explore:
When support is needed (e.g. mornings, community access)
Why it’s required (e.g. memory loss, fatigue, safety risks)
What would happen without it (risk, regression, isolation)
This is especially critical when requesting support coordination, psychosocial supports, or increased core support funding.
Seeing a support request that feels vague or high? There’s often clear functional reasoning behind it, we’re happy to help unpack it.

What does paediatric occupational therapy involve?
The answer: A whole lot more than colouring inside the lines.
OTs support the essential skills your child needs to engage in everyday life. From dressing and feeding themselves, to navigating sensory input, to regulating their emotions or focusing in the classroom.
At MLEA, our paediatric OTs personalise every session to help kids develop confidence, capability and comfort in their own bodies.

MLEA was founded in 2011 by respected Occupational Therapist, Vanessa Aitken. Her approach of impartiality under all circumstances and her 30+ years of clinical practice, quickly established her widespread reputation for high-quality expert clinical opinions, supporting fair settlements nationwide. As demand grew for her services, Vanessa added more specialists to the team. Covering everything from respiratory disease, to spinal injuries, to whiplash, infants to old age.
