Diagnosed with stage 4 ovarian cancer in 2024, Nyree has used exercise as a way to look after both her body and her head while going through various treatments. Exercise has helped her feel stronger, steadier, and more like herself along the way.

She’s now taking on a 48km hike over 4 days to raise funds for ovarian cancer research… while still undergoing treatment. And casually, she’s also just ticked off her 50th parkrun.

Nyree shows us what exercise can be when it’s used properly — as support and a tool to help manage symptoms and something that gives you back a sense of control when so much is out of your hands.

She is a huge inspiration to everyone at Valere, and we are so proud to support her through this.

If you’re able to, please consider donating to support Nyree and ovarian cancer research 🩵

When you love exercise so much it literally becomes your Christmas card 🎄💪

But in all seriousness, our group classes are about so much more than movement. They’re about connection, laughter, shared understanding, and building friendships that carry you through some of the hardest seasons of life.

I am endlessly proud of the strength these women show — not just in the gym, but in everything they’ve faced and achieved. Valere is truly honoured that you’ve trusted us to be part of your journey.

Here’s to resilience, community, and whatever 2026 brings 🤍✨

In 2026 we are adding new group classes comment below for preferred times or if you’d like to try one for free!

It was an absolute honour to be on the Program Committee of this years COSA conference and represent the Exercise Oncology field. A highlight of this years conference was coordinating and chairing the Exercise Is Medicine Session where we were lucky enough to hear from four incredible clinician researchers and their ground breaking research include results of the CHALLENGE trial and I was able to present some of my own research - key take aways include

✅ Exercise in people is Safe, feasible, and effective at improving PROMS and reducing pain and targeted strength and impact loading may have the potential to improve bone pain, bone integrity, and the bone microenvironment to slow growth of lesions. BUT the dose must be sufficient to stimulate these adaptations in people with Multiple Myeloma

✅ Exercise for people post treatment with colon cancer MUST be included in standard of care. For every 16 people 1 recurrence was prevented and for every 14 people 1 death was prevented. This is huge! As Exercise Physiologists we must consider behaviour change activities in our prescription not just provide programs

✅ Prehab is the way of the future for GIT cancers, not only did an prehab program improve patient outcomes it saved the hospital money and reduced post surgical complications with early suggestions it can improve survival. However, again the dose must be sufficient in this trial they included moderate-high intensity aerobic and strength training

✅ Exercise during systemic therapies isn’t easy and our prescription becomes more like an art. We must consider strategies to overcome barriers and manage symptoms when this is done right the benefits are incredible

✅ Exercise of moderate to high intensity, a Mediterranean dietary pattern, and vitamin D intake were all associated with improved responses to immunotherapy. Including group based exercise and symptom management may improve people’s ability to adhere to these interventions

I am incredibly lucky and honoured to be surrounded by such incredible researchers, clinicians, and friends ⭐️

What an afternoon celebrating our Valere Health family 🎄✨
We are so proud of every single person who has walked through our doors this year — each of you has achieved something you should be proud of, showed up for yourselves, and used exercise as a tool during your treatment.

Stay tuned… the announcement of the Jules Jefferis Award winner is coming soon 👀💛

The video of a girl who during treatment couldn’t even do sit to stands due to pain and dizziness, who started leg press at 29kg and now 6 months later is leg pressing over 1.5 times her body weight at 125kg.

Sam - we couldn’t be more proud of you and how far you’ve come 💕 💪🏼

You heard it yourself Valere is the bomb 💣

Meet Bec 💪✨
Diagnosed with stage 3 hormone-positive breast cancer, Bec began training with us just 4 weeks after her mastectomy — with her first goal simply to regain strength and shoulder mobility.

Since then, she’s moved through chemotherapy, radiation and now onto targeted therapy and hormone therapy. Each phase of her exercise journey has adapted to what her body has needed most — from managing cording, lymphoedema and chemo side effects ➡️ to now focusing on long-term health and survivorship.

Her current training goals:
🧬 Support immune function and reduce recurrence risk
🦴 Build and protect bone strength
💪 Maintain muscle mass, strength and mobility

We have included a mix of group and 1:1 sessions throughout the last 13 months and has hardly missed a session

In light of pancreatic cancer awareness month 💜

Can exercise actually make cancer treatment work better?
According to a recent study in Cancer Cell, the answer might be yes.

Researchers found that mice with pancreatic cancer who exercised responded significantly better to immunotherapy — thanks to an exercise-driven immune boost through IL-15 and T-cell activation.

Put simply: movement helped the immune system wake up and support treatment.

So what does this mean
1️⃣ Exercise can actually help your cancer treatments work better — so it’s something that should be done with your treatment, not after it.

2️⃣ But what type of exercise are we talking about?
It’s aerobic exercise — things like walking, running, cycling, dancing, or swimming — anything that gets your heart rate up and makes you huff and puff.

This kind of movement has been shown to boost immune activity and help treatments do their job more effectively.

💡 Stay tuned for our next video in the Exercise and Pancreatic Cancer series, where I’ll show you exactly how to build your Huff & Puff into your weekly schedule.

Is Pilates enough for strength training? 🤔
Short answer — no. And that’s coming from a Pilates instructor.

Pilates is brilliant for:
✨ Core control
✨ Posture and balance
✨ Body awareness and movement quality

But here’s the thing — it’s not enough load to build or maintain muscle and bone strength as we age.
To protect yourself from frailty, falls, and bone loss, your body needs progressive resistance — exercises that challenge your muscles beyond their comfort zone.

🔹 Think: lifting weights, resistance bands, or bodyweight training that actually feels hard by the last few reps. Also add in jumping like skipping or stomping
🔹 Pilates? Keep it in your week — it’s a great complement for mobility and stability.
Just don’t rely on it as your only “strength” session.

👉 Save this if you’ve ever wondered where Pilates fits in your strength program and follow us to find out how you can do this at home

I’m so excited to share that Valere Health has been named a finalist in the 2025 Lord Mayor’s Business Awards

This recognition means so much to me. Valere Health began with my grandmother’s cancer journey and grew alongside Morgan’s PhD research into how exercise can improve outcomes for people with cancer. Today, we’ve translated that research into practice — creating Brisbane’s first and only dedicated exercise oncology clinic, which has provided a safe space for people with cancer to exercise. Morgan and her team has secured over $1M in research and community funding that aims to improve access to care and exercise for people with cancer.

I’m incredibly proud of both my amazing team who I couldn’t do it without but even more importantly thankful to all of our clients who have trusted us throughout their cancer diagnosis.

Excited to celebrate at the Gala Ceremony!
