I'm super excited to finally be able to announce that I have taken over Queensland Lithotripsy Services and will be operating out of my room here at Spine & Dandy until our new clinic is ready.

Wishing all the best to Jane as she enjoys her well earned retirement. She's built both the business and the industry in Brisbane from nothing over 20 years ago and can sit back with pride at enjoy her contribution to healthcare.

Exciting News for Queensland Lithotripsy Services!

After over 20 years of dedicated service, Jane McCarthy has decided to retire and hand over the reins of Queensland Lithotripsy Services. I am both honoured and humbled to take on the ownership and leadership as we move forward.

Jane's passion for providing exceptional lithotripsy treatments has been the driving force behind QLS's success. She has built a remarkable legacy, and I am committed to upholding the high standards she has set while also exploring new avenues for growth and innovation.

I am thrilled to embark on this new chapter and look forward to working closely with our valued patients, healthcare partners, and the broader community. Together, we will carry on Jane's vision and ensure that QLS remains a leading provider of lithotripsy treatments in the region.

Thank you, Jane, for your incredible contribution, and thank you all for your continued support. Exciting times lie ahead!

New Owner, Queensland Lithotripsy Services

🚨 Christmas Hours 🚨

I’ll be taking a short break to jingle and mingle over Christmas so I’ve arranged for the latest for my new assistant Jeff to take care of things while I’m away. Call him the skeleton staff if you will.

I'll be back first thing in 2024.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Do you have trouble getting to sleep?

I've been working on a breathing protocol to help with getting to sleep. It's worked a treat on myself as well as friends and family.

Have a read and give these a go. I guarantee they will improve your life and your sleep.

Yours in sleep,
Dan 😴

Have you ever laid in bed at night and felt too amped up to sleep?Or maybe your mind is on red alert and is rehashing the days events while also trying to predict the events of tomorrow. These are signs of being stuck in sympathetic drive. In my experience, this is where people have trouble with

If you're out of the Acute phase of injury, it's time to show yourself some LOVE.

Remember PEACE & LOVE? This is the LOVE part.

L is for Load:
Injured tissues need to learn how to tolerate load again. Unfortunately this does not happen just because you're pain free.

O is for Optimism:
Injuries can get you down, there's no doubt about that. Especially if it's a nasty one and keeping you from doing what you want to do. Finding ways to stay motivated can get you back sooner.

V is for Vascularisation:
Get the blood pumping. Getting some pain-free cardio done while you're getting back to 100% promotes healing and keeps the body in good nick.

E is for Exercise:
Sooner or later you're going to have to use the injured thing again. I use an approach based on graduated exposure which basically takes you from where you are and gets you to where you want to be by exposing the injured site to more and more each week.

'Athlete': One who participates in physical exercise or sports.

Some people do this for money. The rest of us do it for fun.

We are The Weekend Athletes.

Our demands both in life and sport are different to those in professional sport.

You need someone who understands your life situation, your goals, and your sport.

I get people with busy lives back to playing pain-free.

Step one after injury - make PEACE with it.

We no longer recommend the first half of RICE. Just the CE - Compression and Elevation. These are great for managing swelling.

Rest is not recommended. Why? Because in general, you need to get movement back into the injured area. This does a number of things. It helps prevent stiffness, it helps to circulate blood which promotes healing, and it helps to move swelling from the area. These are just a few of many benefits

Ice is a bit controversial. Personally I no longer ice anything as I haven't found enough (read: any) evidence to convince me it's helpful.

Avoiding Anti-Inflammatories is something that doesn't really get spoken about. Especially when GPs continue to promote their use. For now I'll keep it short - inflammation is part of the healing process. Why are we trying to stop it!?

Be judicial about the information you seek. Education can come in many forms and sometimes GPs aren't best placed to advise you on your injury. Physios are the experts when it comes to injury but don't just take my word for it. Come find out.

Here's what to do if you get injured.

RICE is out, PEACE & LOVE is in. It seems a bit convoluted but hear me out.

First, make PEACE with your injuries. Protect it! Elevate it and use a Compression bandage to help manage swelling. Ice does NOT do this. Avoid anti-inflammatories such as ibuprofen (Nurofen) if you can. Finally seek some professional advice on how to best manage your injury and how to get back to your fighting best.

Next, show yourself some LOVE. Rather than rest, injuries need to be gradually exposed to Load so that whatever has been injured can get back to it's previous abilities. Get some Exercise to increase blood flow (Vascularisation). Ideally this will involve rehabbing the injury but other forms of exercise help the healing process too. Stay optimistic - there's always light at the end of the tunnel, even if your frustrated by slow progress.

Next post will take a bit closer look at PEACE & LOVE respectively as there are a few important nuggets of advice in there.
