Paracetamol is 'Category A' in pregnancy, meaning that robust clinical evidence shows it is SAFE to take in pregnancy.

The Trump administration has made highly controversial claims about the causes of autism and ADHD, asserting that paracetamol (also known as acetaminophen) use during pregnancy increases the risk of children being diagnosed as neurodivergent.

RANZCOG joins leading clinicians and scientists worldwide in rejecting these claims. Scientific evidence shows no link between paracetamol use in pregnancy and autism or ADHD during childhood, with several large and reliable studies directly contradicting the administration’s statement.

The causes of neurodivergence are incompletely understood and remain complex, involving both genetic and environmental factors. Earlier studies raising concerns about paracetamol could not determine whether the medicine itself was responsible, or whether other factors explained the association.

A much larger and stronger study, published in 2024 by Ahlqvist and colleagues, looked at 2.5 million children in Sweden. When they accounted for important factors like family history of autism/ADHD and sibling comparisons, they found no link between paracetamol use during pregnancy and children developing autism or ADHD.

The use of medications during pregnancy should always balance the potential benefits against any potential harms - both of the medication and of the condition being treated - to the mother and the fetus. The Ahlqvist study provides conclusive evidence that paracetamol use during pregnancy does not increase the chance of neurodivergence in the offspring and therefore should be considered safe to use in pregnancy where there is a clear reason to do so.

People who are uncertain about medication use in pregnancy should discuss this with their doctor or midwife.

Allergy sufferers, are you ready?? 🍃🌾🌺

5 tips to help you survive allergy season:

🤧Reduce exposure: avoid going outside on windy days, where possible.
🤧Flush out the stuck allergens: allergens can get stuck in your sinuses, so use steamy showers and saline nasal spray to flush it out (seriously, keep saline spray at work, in the car, in your bag, everywhere!)
🤧Antish*tamines: take an oral antihistamine daily.
🤧Nasal steroid spray: sometimes needed when nasal swelling is significant.
🤧Eye drops: various types can help with allergic eye symptoms.

See your GP if your allergies are getting the best of you.

🫶 Support Local 🫶

Chatterbook is a physical planner for families with members who have complex disabilities, to allow effective (and beautiful!) communication between the family & their care providers. It has sections for routines, medication logs, feeding logs, toileting logs, and journal entries. It's NDIS approved and created by a local mum who "gets it".

After 33 years, we say goodbye to Dr Andrew Smith. Dr Smith began at Cavendish Road Clinic in 1992, and has established himself as a highly trusted and respected GP for generations of families in the area. His patients' loyalty is a testament to his care, empathy and dedication. We are all certainly going to miss his sense of humour, his seemingly carefree approach to life, and his genuine care for his patients and staff.

Dr Smith is looking forward to doing "a whole lot of nothing" for a while, enjoying time with his family, and throwing himself into his art.

Please join us in congratulating Dr Smith on his retirement! 🥳✨️ Please share your thanks, memories and messages below ❤️

Check your poo!

Scary stat: Bowel cancer is the 2nd deadliest cancer in Australia.
Awesome fact: If detected early, 99% of cases of bowel cancer are curable!

Playing with your poo isn't fun, but it's better than bowel cancer. Do the screening, it could save your life. 💩

If you're 45-50 years old, order your free kit online here: https://www.ncsr.gov.au/information-for-participants/order-a-replacement-bowel-test-kit/

If you're over 50 years old, go find it in the drawer. It isn't helping anyone in there!

Dear Cav Rd Clinic Patients,
From 1 July 2025, there will be a small increase to our consultation fees. This change allows us to continue providing high quality healthcare, at appointment lengths that our patients deserve, with adequate nursing and administration support.
We understand the importance of accessible healthcare, however this fee increase is necessary in the face of rising costs with insufficiently rising Medicare rebates.
We thank you for your understanding.
