At QCG and AFib Institute, we believe that caring for your heart includes looking after your mental and emotional wellbeing.

Today, on ๐—ฅ ๐—จ ๐—ข๐—ž? ๐——๐—ฎ๐˜† (11 September 2025), we're joining the national movement to encourage meaningful conversations because sometimes, a simple check-in could change a life.

If youโ€™re not sure how to ask someone if theyโ€™re okay, resources are available all year round to guide you through the conversation. You don't have to be a professional to show someone you care.

๐Ÿซ€ How does your heart know when to beat?
Your heart has its own built-in electrical system that keeps everything ticking. Known as the cardiac conduction system, it controls your heart rate and rhythm โ€” adapting to your bodyโ€™s needs, whether youโ€™re exercising or at rest.

Key players include:
โšก S-A Node โ€“ your natural pacemaker
โšก A-V Node โ€“ the electrical bridge between heart chambers
โšก His-Purkinje Network โ€“ delivering the final signal to the ventricles

But when that system doesnโ€™t work properly, it can cause arrhythmias โ€“ heartbeats that are too slow (bradycardia) or too fast (tachycardia) โ€“ and may lead to dizziness, fatigue, or more serious complications.

How does diabetes affect your heart?
If you have diabetes, you're around twice as likely to develop heart disease or experience a stroke than someone who doesnโ€™t. Thatโ€™s because consistently high blood sugar levels can damage the blood vessels of your heart over time.

At QCG, weโ€™re committed to helping patients with diabetes understand and manage their heart health. We work closely with referring GPs to support long-term prevention and early diagnosis of cardiovascular disease.

Talk to your GP about a Heart Health Check โ€“ especially if you have a history of diabetes or gestational diabetes.

Take control of AFib โ€“ with a plan that fits in your pocket ๐Ÿ’Š

Some people living with atrial fibrillation (AFib) can benefit from a โ€œPill-in-Pocketโ€ strategy. Our cardiac electrophysiology cardiologists who are specialists in heart rhythm can personalise the approach to help you manage episodes at home โ€“ with clear steps for specific medications that are only needed if an episode occurs (not every day).
๐Ÿ“ Know what to take.
๐Ÿ•’ Know when to wait.
๐Ÿšจ Know when to get help.
๐Ÿ’™ Itโ€™s about confidence, care, and living well with your heart condition.

Ask your GP about a referral to QCG to find out more.

What is Atrial Fibrillation (AFib)?
Atrial fibrillation (AFib) is a common type of heart rhythm disorder. It occurs when the upper chambers of the heart (the atria) beat rapidly and irregularly (they fibrillate) and they become out of sync with the lower heart chambers.
People with AFib may experience symptoms like fatigue, palpitations, shortness of breath and dizziness. But it can also be silent, going unnoticed while still increasing the risk of stroke, heart failure, and other complications.
At QCG, our specialists diagnose and manage AFib with tailored strategies that may include medication, lifestyle changes, or procedures such as cardioversion or ablation.
Visit https://qcg.com.au/common-cardiac-conditions/atrial-fibrillation/ to learn more about AFib and the treatments available.

At QCG, we support patients living with diabetes to keep their hearts strong, healthy, and protected. This week, weโ€™re raising awareness of the diabetesโ€“heart health connection and encouraging regular heart check-ups, especially for people who have diabetes or are pre-diabetic.
