In November this year, the participants of the VIITALS (Vision Impairment, Intellectual Disability, Training, Pre-Employment and Adult Life Skills) Program will be hosting an all abilities EDM party! All participants have been working hard at improving their micro business planning and management skills including their spelling and grammar, braille literacy and touch typing, computer organisation skills and software use, emailing, researching, assistive technology use, budgeting and money management and of course, composing original Electronic Dance Music songs to be played for the dance party. All profits from this dance party will go directly to participants of the VIITALS Program to get each of them a pair of Meta Glasses. Stay tuned, more info to come as these talented young adults continue to prepare and demonstrate their employable abilities!

What a turn out yet again from SASSV! How lucky are these students from all over Australia to attend the National Braille Music Camp in Mittagong! Have fun everyone!

This morning 8 South Australian students from SASSVI, CCC and SSS are heading to NSW for National Braille Music Camp. They are accompanied by three SASSVI staff Lily Gower, Sarah Valle and Oliver Land. This year we are also excited to welcome back SASSVI alumni Antony Abbracciavento as a teacher! We will see you in a week after 7 days and nights of braille music theory, choir, ensemble, independent living skills, social skills and of course … fun! ID: 8 students of various heights stand with their backs to the camera, four adults stand smiling at the camera. Behind them is a glass window where the tarmac and airplane can be seen.

Check out this article written on the work of the talented Shannon Michaels Shan Michaels and her Can Touch This exhibition at the ACE Gallery, created for and with the South Australian BVI community!

Exhibition work was created in collaboration with students from the South Australian School & Services for Vision Impaired and their wonderful teacher Lily Gower. A 15 minute soundtrack with three different movements was composed by SA local musician within the community, Antony Abbracciavento and is played on loop throughout the exhibition.

Shan, local to the Sunshine coast QLD is a wonderful advocate for the BVI community and is passionate about breaking down barriers and creating equal opportunities within the Arts.

Have a read, and if you are in South Australia, do yourself a favour, go and have a feel! : )

This is a check in post for all members of the BLV community living on the Sunshine Coast, Brisbane, Gold Coast and Northern NSW regions. For most, I imagine you have never been through a cyclone before. If you are living by yourself, or feel you want to stay with another family, please reach out to those around you.

You will definitely hear some noises that are unfamiliar and unpredictable. You may feel vibrations in your house caused by winds. Please note it is best to stay in your bathroom or laundry, any room that is solid with minimal windows. If you can, it is always best to cover yourself with a mattress for extra protection.

I pray you are all with loved ones and that the severity of this cyclone moves quickly for you all. Don’t be afraid to reach out for help, but remember ALWAYS stay indoors leading up to, during and after the cyclone has passed. It is not safe to go outside when the calm of the eye is passing, nor after it has passed. You never know what could be laying around on the ground.

Stay safe friends x
