đź’ˇ Brain Injury is a key focus at The Speech Guy & Co.

Research highlights the value of group therapy and exciting approaches like project-based therapy for people with brain injury (Togher et al., 2023; LĂŞ et al., 2022; Behn et al., 2019).

Last year, two of our clients, K & R, created the “Brain Rehab” project—a personal list of strategies that supported their recovery, now shared to inspire others. Swipe to see snippets from their project!

Did you know that 1.2 million Australians have a communication disability?

This is approximately the same number of Australians who have diabetes! We know how common diabetes can be, and most of us have probably met someone with diabetes. It is very likely that you have also met someone with a communication disability (and maybe not even realised it).

This is a very large number of people with a reduced ability to communicate their thoughts, feelings, opinions and choices.

At The Speech Guy & Co., we are committed to ensuring that communication is everyone’s right.

This week is Speech Pathology Week! The theme this year is "Communication is everyone's right".

Communication disability is largely invisible. People with a communication disability will often find it difficult to speak or advocate for themselves. At The Speech Guy & Co., we consider it our duty to ensure that everyone has the right to communicate their thoughts, feelings, opinions and choices. However, for many with a communication disability, this remains difficult.

As such, many Australians with communication disability cannot maximise educational, health and social outcomes, without the intervention of a speech pathologist.

This is where the point lies - communication disability is not just a health issue. It is also a human rights issue.

Stay tuned this week to learn more about communication disability in Australia and its impacts.

At The Speech Guy & Co., we are committed to ensuring that communication is everyone's right.

This week is Brain Injury Awareness Week, as declared by Synapse - Australia's Brain Injury Organisation.

More than 75% of people with an acquired brain injury have difficulties with communication. Common difficulties can include:
- Slurred speech
- Confused language
- Difficulty understanding or remembering what has been said
- Difficulty naming things or thinking of the right word
- Difficulty with starting and participating in conversations
- Changes in social skills
- Difficulty with reading and writing

While there is a wide range of possible communication impairments, the impact can be huge. People with brain injury can experience loss of identity, social isolation, depression or anxiety, difficulties returning to work and trouble with accessing community services. Every brain injury is different, but the devastating impacts can be similar.

Communication interventions for people with acquired brain injury is a special interest for The Speech Guy, Michael. Contact now to make a referral!

This week is National Stroke Week.

Did you know that 1 in 3 stroke survivors have difficulties with communication? More than 50% of stroke survivors can have difficulties with swallowing as well. These difficulties can make it hard for people to connect with others and can be very frustrating and isolating.

Speech Pathology can help stroke survivors with their communication and swallowing. The Speech Guy, Michael, is highly experienced in helping people with stroke.
