Today is World Osteoporosis Day!

Osteoporosis causes bones to become weak and fragile so that they break easily – even as a result of a minor fall, a bump, a sneeze, or a sudden movement. Fractures caused by osteoporosis can be life-threatening and a major cause of pain and long-term disability.

Five steps which you can take for healthy bones and a fracture-free future are:

1: Exercise regularly to keep your bones and muscles moving
2: Ensure your diet is rich in bone-health nutrients
3: Avoid negative lifestyle habits
4: Discuss with your doctor if you have risk factors
5: Get tested and treated if needed

To assess your risk of osteoporosis, you can click here: https://riskcheck.osteoporosis.foundation/

Please make an appointment with your doctor if you have any concerns about your bone health.

Friday August 6 is Jeans for Genes Day.

1 in 20 kids face a birth defect or genetic disease, like cancer, cystic fibrosis, and life-threatening metabolic disorders - most of which are poorly understood and have no specific treatments or cure.

To join this worthwhile cause, you can encourage your friends, family and work colleagues to wear denim for a day and donate.

The Jeans for Genes campaign raises funds for research in genetic diseases and gene therapy.

Due to the current lockdown restrictions in South-East Queensland, we have reintroduced a number of measures at our clinic for the safety of our patients, doctors, and staff.
These safety measures include:
• Encouraging telephone appointments (where possible).
• Limiting the time of face-to-face appointments.
• Requiring all patients to wear a face mask while in the clinic.
We will also continue to observe social distancing >1.5m and limit the number of patients in our waiting room.
If you have symptoms of the flu, a cold, or a loss of sense of smell or taste, then a COVID-19 test is necessary. Please refer to the QLD Health website for a list of COVID-19 clinics and testing centres.
If you are unwell and have respiratory symptoms, please ask for a telephone appointment with a GP, and a safe review will be arranged.
Please be assured that our clinic is COVID-19 safe.

DonateLife Week from 25 July- 1 August brings attention to the need for organ donations in Australia.

For around 1,800 Australians currently on the organ transplant waitlist, it’s a matter of life and death. There are an additional 12,000 people on dialysis who may benefit from a kidney transplant.

It takes just one minute to register online at https://www.donatelife.gov.au/join-register. All you need is your Medicare card. If you want to be a donor, make sure you tell your family and friends.

This July, over 38,000 people have signed up for the Dry July cause, which raises money for cancer research by fundraising and going 'dry' from consuming alcohol.

Funds raised during Dry July will provide invaluable services to cancer patients, carers and their families, aiming to make a difficult time a little bit easier.

Benefits of going dry this July include clearer headspace, more energy and better sleep, weight loss, healthier skin and a sense of achievement!

This July, why not say " I won't cheers to that" and experience the health benefits of going dry - or donate to a participant and help make a difference for people affected by cancer.

July 11-17 is National Diabetes Week, aiming to improve education and awareness surrounding diabetes, and its effects on people’s everyday activities.
Although diabetes affects around 1.8 million Australians, there are still common misconceptions surrounding insulin management, the likelihood of developing the condition and its impacts.
We’ve busted some of the common myths surrounding diabetes and cut through the confusion many people experience.
Unfortunately, not all types of diabetes can be prevented, and there is no known cause or cure. However, there are ways to manage the risk factors which can have an impact on exercise, diet and daily activities.
If you are experiencing any concerns, you can speak to your GP.
