World Autism Awareness Day is the 2nd April.
Anxiety is a common symptom for people with autism. One of the things that commonly happens for people with autism is that the Amygdala, in the limbic system in the brain, is turned on and sensing danger a lot. This leads the body to producing the stress hormone cortisol. The overload on the amygdala over rules the frontal cortex the part of the brain which controls rational reasoning. Leading to melt downs. Sound familiar!
Using emotion freedom technique (EFT) otherwise called Tapping we can send calming signals to the amygdala with the EFT tapping sequence on acupuncture points. This lowers the cortisol, and allows the frontal cortex to come back onboard and then rational reasoning can return.
A person with autism learning how to do tapping for themselves could give them another way to self-sooth. Tapping can provide a tangible tool for managing overwhelming emotions.
I use EFT with my clients to reduce cortisol to allow their frontal cortex to process big emotions when we are working. I use this helpful technique myself because it works for me.
I hope this information has been helpful in introducing a method that may be useful.
