It’s International Women’s Day and we’re looking at how we can March Forward and Accelerate Action to best support women during the perinatal period, paying particular attention to their unique contexts and experiences.

Every person has a right to health care that takes into consideration their individual social and emotional situation.” (COPE, 2023)

Key considerations for health professionals:
~ Women experience unique psychosocial challenges that can significantly impact perinatal mental health
~ A prior history of mental illness remains the biggest risk factor for perinatal mental health conditions
~ Social isolation, life stressors, and trauma increase the likelihood of distress during the perinatal period

Some groups face greater exposure to stressors, trauma, or lack of support:
~ Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander women
~ Migrant women, including refugees and asylum seekers
~ Women in rural and remote areas
~ Adolescent mothers
~ Women experiencing intimate partner violence
~ LGBTQIA+ parents

Understanding these contexts is essential for providing comprehensive care.

The COPE Guideline also recommends consulting with relevant organisations such as local Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Health Services or Migrant Health Centres when supporting women from these groups.

Thank you for helping us support Australian women and their families with best-practice perinatal mental health care.

Have you heard of Ryan's Rule?

It's a three step process to support patients, as well as their families and carers, to raise concerns if a patient’s health condition is getting worse or not improving as expected.

Patients of any age admitted to one of our hospitals—including the emergency department—and in some Hospital in the Home (HITH) services can call Ryan’s Rule by following these steps. 👇

Once Ryan's Rule is enacted, a nurse or doctor will undertake a clinical review of the patient and their treatment.

Ryan’s Rule is not for general complaints and should only be used for concerns related to a patient’s health condition while they are in hospital.

Happy New year!

As we step into 2025, the team at Naomi Jama Psychology extends our warmest wishes to our clients, partners, colleagues, and friends. This year, we’re committed to our vision to support you in your wellness goals and finding personalised solutions to live your best life. Whilst Naomi Jama Psychology is a Women's Health focused practice with a passion for the perinatal period, we are now offering couples tailored sessions to prepare for the transition to parenthood and family life. Additionally, Naomi Jama Psychology also welcomes a diverse range of clients including those exploring a neurodiversity diagnosis, perimenopausal impacts on mental health, grief and trauma, anxiety, depression, work-life stressors, perinatal support for dads.

Just a reminder that on the 1st January each year, your Medicare entitlements are renewed allowing you to access 10 Medicare rebated sessions with a mental Health Care Plan from your GP. If you have remaining sessions from a plan in 2024, these can still be used, negating the need for another GP appointment. You may also have rebates available through private health or NDIS.

In 2025, Naomi Jama Psychology is also extending operating hours to some Saturday mornings! Saturday rates are $140 per 50 minute appointment. We currently have availability across all days and I look forward to the opportunity to be of assistance. You can book online at www.naomijamapsychology.com.au or reach out to naomi@naomijamapsychology.com.au . This is also a good opportunity to let you know that whilst we offer some telehealth only days (Monday and Wednesday), you can request telehealth at any time by reaching out to our team and requesting a link.

As always, if you have concerns about financing appointments, you can discuss your personal circumstances with us, and we can arrange payment plans.

Sincerely,

The team at Naomi Jama Psychology,

Today I’m sharing the beautiful work of my talented friend Kristy. Everyone needs the strength of their friends and loved ones sometimes, and too many precious hearts have been lost to silent pain.

This should have happened a long time ago.

This should have happened a long time ago.

Thank you and for bringing light to this issue. ❤️

People who have experienced loss or a miscarriage have reported the heartbreak and trauma caused by being surrounded by heavily pregnant women or new born babies at hospitals/clinics, while going through their own pregnancy loss.💔

We are here to campaign for seperate spaces for anyone going through a miscarriage. Something has to change.

Drop a 💯 in the comments if you agree.

Sending our love and support to anyone going through the loss of their baby. Please reach out to us 🩷

Toxic positivity is a trap that often comes up in motherhood - trying to put on a brave face when things can feel hard, disappointing, overwhelming, etc. Here is a good article about why it's important to acknowledge our authentic experience :-)

Excessive 'toxic' positivity can be unhelpful and keeps us from learning to tolerate our feelings, including difficult ones, in healthy ways.
