GEM Support Coordination

GEM Support Coordination NDIS navigation, connecting YOU with individualised supports & services to achieve your goals! Hi! And so, GEM Support Coordination was born! Why Gem?
(1)

I’m Meagan, and I am the owner and director of Gem Support Coordination. Having been involved with the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) and National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) since its inception, I have an immense depth of understanding of the NDIS framework surpassing many others in the industry, making me best placed to assist clients to do the same. My Disability History
My 15 year history in the Disability Sector spans many roles, from support worker, accommodation coordinator, Workplace Health & Safety, NDIS Senior Local Area Coordinator (LAC), Behavioural Practitioner and more. With a Diploma in Community Services, I have gained valuable insights and outcomes into the disabled community, and their diverse needs. I pride myself on keeping up with the latest changes and additions to the NDIS agency, and maximising these changes for the benefit of my clients and their requirements. With my extensive experience navigating the complex roadmaps of the NDIS, I can clearly advocate for my clients and persevere and persist for the supports they are entitled to. After working for other companies as a Support Coordinator, I felt as though I was in the right industry, but with the wrong motivations. KPI’s, high caseloads and internal pressures detracted from the very important work we were doing. I sought a more intimate, big-picture journey where I was involved with my clients from the beginning, assisting and supporting them to fulfill their goals and work towards their ideal lifestyle. My vision is to create a supportive space to assist my disability clients, providing clear and concise information on the services and supports they are entitled to under their NDIS plan. Having a deep passion for Opal mining, I reflected on how my search would be for ‘Gem Quality’ stones; each stone having its very own unique brilliance and quality. Once you find your Gem? You get an innate sense of achievement and fulfillment for your efforts. Support Coordination can be a challenging responsibility at times, however it's also one of the most rewarding. Using my skill set to help clients understand their NDIS plan and start achieving some life changing outcomes is what drives me every day. Taking the stress and confusion out of the process is such a relief for my clients and I'm happy I am able to do that. Patience, not complacence
Improvement and growth is something we should always be aiming for. Within my organisation, there is no room for stagnancy or ‘just enough’ effort. My role (and my client’s lifestyle!) is genuinely and directly affected by my efforts and understanding; enabling them to continue to grow, as Gem continues to expand. Patience and understanding is key and something I try to continue building on every day. My 3 year plan is to grow Gem SC into a small organisation that provides a top quality service, with clients as the focal point. I excel at helping clients to navigate NDIS pathways and their processes, and how best to use them. Helping clients to understand each section of their plan and how it can be used, while developing an appropriate support budget to facilitate these needs, is essential to growth for both Gem SC and my clients. Many of my clients suffer from overwhelm and have difficulty knowing what they are entitled to and how to go about accessing it. If I can simplify the process for my clients and allay their concerns whilst providing continued care, then it’s a job well done. As a parent with a neurodivergent child, I have first hand experience on navigating an NDIS plan and the way that looks from a parents perspective. These supports - once accessed - are life-changing. I can’t wait to assist you on your way to living your ideal lifestyle. Get in touch!

🚨 NDIS Plan Update: Funding Periods Begin 19 May 2025 🚨

From Monday 19 May, there have been changes to Section 33 of the NDIS Act that will apply to all NEW and REASSESSED plans through the PACE system. Here's what you need to know:

💎 Plans can run for up to 5 years and the NDIA will split funding into different time periods depending on the category and type of support.

💎 Funding periods can now be included – funding periods are set timeframes within your NDIS plan that show how much funding you can use.

💎 Funding periods can vary from weekly, monthly or quarterly depending on the support category and are implemented at the Planners discretion.

💎 This won’t reduce the total funding in a plan – it just controls when and how much can be accessed at a time.

💎 Designed to:
- Support better budgeting
- Reduce risk of running out of funds early
- Improve oversight and planning

💎 Applies only to:
- New participants
- Participants undergoing plan reassessment
(Existing or extended plans are not impacted yet)

💎 Each funding component (Core, Capacity Building, Capital) will have its own funding period.

📣 The DIA notes there is limited public info available. Gem Support Coordination will work to support providers, participants & intermediaries with clarity and updates.

💰🚶‍♀️MEL’S BLOODY LONG WALK FUNDRAISER 🚶‍♀️💰

Have you ever walked 42 600 steps in one day? Our very own Mel Vivian is doing it, in the name of Mitochondrial Disease.

Mel says:

‘I'm walking 35km in The Bloody Long Walk to help Australians living with mitochondrial disease.

That’s 46,200 steps in one day!

I know I’ll cross the finish line exhausted and blistered, but that’s nothing compared to what people with mitochondrial disease (mito) go through every day of their lives.

Mito robs the body’s cells of energy, causing multiple organ dysfunction or failure. It can affect anyone at any age.

Please sponsor my walk to fund research into desperately needed treatments and cures for this devastating disease.’

Every dollar counts!

🗣 DISABILITY ANNOUNCEMENT: FROM, YOUR LOVED ONE 🗣
Navigating friendships while living with a disability, can be hard.
Whether you were friends before your disability - met during your diagnosis - or afterwards, there can be uncertainty surrounding how best to maintain a solid connection, and a lot of the time, it will come down to having a conversation with your friends.

Just like you would relate to a friend when you have a flu, cold or injury, knowing about an event and being able to decline or accept depending on your circumstances, is far kinder than someone making the decision to exclude you, then seeing photos of your friends out and about, without you.

💎Never exclude your loved one from events. Even if you are 99% certain they won’t make it, the invitation alone states: ‘I want your company, you matter’. The equivalent of an ‘I wish you were here’ postcard, the gesture alone is one of kindness and respect.

💎Ensure there is at least one event in your social group, that is inclusive. By this, I mean something that you know is within the capability of your loved one, whether at a certain time of day, in an accessible space and with contingencies in place should they need to leave early.

💎If you’re not sure of the requirements of your disabled loved one, ask them. The act of asking a disability-related question shows you are interested in their well-being, and adaptable to it. It’s much kinder to ask and/or learn about someone’s condition/illness than to make assumptions or simply exclude them from planned activities.

💎If you know a loved one is attending a social event but are concerned it may be too much for them, think of ways you can help them in these circumstances. Perhaps organise transport, locating accessible toilets at the venue, recommend or suggest booking accomodation to allow periods or rest, or troubleshoot any potential concerns you may have. Your loved one will be grateful for it! This could include being dropped right at an access point, or having someone carry their belongings, or collecting food for them. They may suffer in silence as they don't want to be a burden, resulting in overdoing it, days of fatigue for recovery and just general feelings of disappointment.

💎Lastly, educate yourself. If you have a friend or loved one who suffers from any kind of chronic health condition, the very least you can do is to spend five minutes on google, reading trusted websites to better understand their condition. Whilst you could simply ask them, it can be emotionally laborious for the sufferer to have to explain something you could easily have learned.
