Dancing Kizomba does wonderful things for the BodyMind. It helps us learn how to ground with the way we transfer weight through our feet and soft knees, helps us to charge (or build energy in) the pelvis through a constant pulling back of the pelvis and to connect with a softened upper body (among many other BodyMind benefits).

It is equally important to recover from dancing Kizomba by releasing the psoas muscle (which is shortened when the pelvis is tilted backwards), opening the contracted lower back as well as redistributing energy evenly through the upper as well as lower body through postures for pulsation.

I focus on recovery as an important ending to each of my workshops and dance classes. We want the benefits of dancing Kizomba (and there are many) without any of the wear and tear from dance training.

Feeling a sense of strength and support in your feet and legs is the first step to building embodied resilience and a sense of BodyMind and relational safety.

Sayings like ‘standing your ground’, ‘knowing where you stand’, ‘putting your foot down’, ‘standing up for yourself’ and ‘standing on your own two feet’ all speak to the our collective intuitive understanding of the importance of our legs and feet in our way of being in the world.

Many of us have chronically tense feet, locked knees and weak legs, yet wonder why we feel like ‘the rug gets pulled out from under us’ or like we could be ‘pushed over with a feather’.

Doing a squat like this pushing through the feet into the ground (either with a friend or alone) while breathing deeply can help to build strength and energy in the legs. Doing some heel drops in this posture can also assist you to get a felt sense of your legs.

If you would like to explore how to develop your sense of resilience and internal safety, you can book a free 15 minute consultation or book an appointment, by emailing dana@bodymindinbloom.com

give participants an opportunity to explore embodied emotional expression. Sometimes we just need to let out our RRRRAAAWWWRRR! Growling can help to release blocks in the jaw, throat, and thorax and deepen breathing. It can also be a bit of fun!
