Keep your Christmas calendars well out of paws reach! 🐾

Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, two compounds that pets can’t metabolise effectively. This can cause toxic build-up in their nervous system, heart and kidneys. Dogs and cats are especially sensitive, and symptoms can escalate quickly.

Prevention tips:
✅ Store all chocolate products securely
✅ Keep desserts and cocoa powder off counters
✅ Educate guests not to share any sweets with pets

🎄 Chocolate is a holiday classic, but for pets, it’s a medical emergency waiting to happen. Read more about chocolate toxicity by following the link in the comments.

If you have a medical emergency with your pet, go straight to your local AES hospital.

Big bark energy… until the thunder hits 🐶⚡

Pets don’t get weather forecasts, they just hear the thunder and that can be scary! Here are a few ways to help your pet ride out a storm feeling safe and loved:

🌩️ Create a calm zone: A comfy bed, familiar scents, and soft lighting can help them feel secure
🌩️ Stay nearby: Your presence = reassurance. Sit with them, speak softly and stay calm
🌩️ Soothe with sound: Try gentle music or a white noise playlist to muffle the thunder
🌩️ Snug comfort: A thunder shirt or body wrap can help reduce anxiety for some pets
🌩️ Desensitise early: Play storm sounds softly during calm times to help them get used to it.

Every pet copes differently. Patience and comfort go a long way!

Did you know our furry friends can develop diabetes too? Just like in humans, it’s a condition that requires awareness, care and early detection.

Here are some common signs to look out for:
🐾 Excessive thirst or urination
🍽️ Changes in appetite
⚖️ Sudden weight loss or gain
😴 Low energy or lethargy
🩺 Weakness or unsteady walking

If you notice any of these symptoms, book a vet check-up. With proper management, pets with diabetes can still enjoy long and healthy lives 💕

🐈 PSA from your local cats: Ticks don’t just affect dogs!

While cats might not roam tick-prone areas as much, they can still get ticks, and protecting them isn’t as simple as sharing your dog’s tick treatment.

Unlike dogs, cats are highly sensitive to many tick and flea products. Ingredients like pyrethrin and permethrin, often safe for dogs, are toxic to cats and can cause tremors, drooling, or even seizures.

Here’s what every cat owner should know:
✅ Use only cat-safe tick prevention recommended by your vet
✅ Check your cat daily for ticks, especially around the head and neck
✅ Act fast if you notice wobbliness, paralysis, loss of appetite, laboured breathing, or changes in their “meow”

If you suspect tick paralysis, seek emergency veterinary care immediately.

At AES Jindalee we have been inundated with stray cats & kittens. We do our best to work with the public, council and local foster groups to reunite them with their owners or find their forever homes, however this can mean they stay in our clinic for a very long time. When adopting a cat, please ensure they are microchipped so if they go missing, we can reunite you with your best friend a lot easier 🐈
