Did you know snake bites are one of the most common pet emergencies in Australia?

Snakes usually strike when they feel threatened. Curious pets often get too close, especially in warmer months when snakes are more active.

Keep your pets out of high-risk areas:
🌳 Long grass or bushland
🛶 Near water sources
🛠️ Under sheds or decks

If your pet is bitten by a snake, it's important to try and keep them calm and still, and get them to an emergency vet as quickly as possible.

Who’s heading to the beach this long weekend with their doggo? Here's some handy tips to make the most of your day of surf and sand. 🏖️

✅ Sun protection – Pets can get sunburn too! Apply pet-safe sunscreen to sensitive areas like the nose, ears, and belly

✅ Hydration and shade – Bring plenty of fresh water and a shady spot (umbrella or tent) to prevent heatstroke. Avoid peak heat hours (10am–3pm)

✅ Watch those paws – Hot sand can burn paws, and sharp shells or debris can cause cuts. Test the sand with your hand before letting them walk

✅ Ocean hazards – Jellyfish and bluebottles can be dangerous. If your pet is stung, rinse with seawater and head to a vet immediately

✅ Stay vigilant – Keep an eye on them at all times. Strong currents, ingesting sand, or drinking seawater can lead to serious health issues

✅ Post-beach care – Rinse off salt and sand to avoid skin irritation, and check paws for cuts or lodged shells

The leash is clipped, the tail is wagging, and you’re off for a refreshing walk. But as your pet explores the bushes, danger could be hiding in plain sight.

Some plants along the path (like oleander, sago palm, or lilies) can be toxic if ingested. A curious nibble could turn a happy stroll into an emergency.

Here is a list of some of the most common plants that are toxic for pets.

A few more tips for a safe walk:

▪️ Keep an eye on what your pet sniffs or chews
▪️ Snap a photo of anything they ingest
▪️ When in doubt, call your vet immediately.

You wouldn’t let a dog drive a car…

That would be ridiculous (and dangerous).

So why let them ride with their head out the window?

It can be cute seeing dogs with their ears flapping in the wind, but letting pets ride with their head out the window is actually highly dangerous, and can lead to serious harm.

Here’s why:
✅ Fall risk - A sudden stop or swerve could send your pet flying out or hurt
✅ Eye injuries - Debris, bugs, or dust can cause painful damage
✅ Impact injuries - Rocks, branches or car mirrors can hit them at high speed
✅ Ear and lung issues - High-speed wind can trigger infections and breathing problems

Keep them safe: Use a secured harness or pet carrier inside the car. Safety beats risk every time!

This is Willow, a lively Jack Russell with a nose for adventure.

One evening, she wandered out of sight for only 30 minutes. That’s all it took for her to find a cane toad…

Cane toads secrete a powerful toxin that can kill pets quickly. Jack Russell's, like Willow, are especially at risk because they love to sniff and dig, even during the day.

Thankfully, the amazing team at Animal Emergency Service Underwood acted fast and saved her life.

⚠️ What you need to know about cane toads:
- They’re most active at night, especially in warm, wet months (October–May in Australia)
- Common symptoms of poisoning include drooling, vomiting, shaking and seizures
- Get to a vet immediately, cane toads have enough toxin to kill an average-sized dog in 15 minutes

Keep your pets supervised at dusk/night, and learn the signs. A few minutes can make all the difference.
