🐍 As the weather warms up, snakes become more active and so do the risks for our pets.

Dogs are naturally curious, which can put them in danger of snake bites.

⚠️ If you notice sudden weakness, wobbliness, trembling, or even collapse followed by “apparent recovery,” seek emergency vet care immediately.

When pets are unwell, emotions can run high. Our team is here after hours when your usual vet is closed, and we use a triage system so the sickest patients are treated first. Care may be happening in different areas of the hospital, even if you don’t see it right away.

💙 Our team are people too
🐾 We are here to support you and provide the best care possible
🚫 Aggression or rudeness makes it harder for us to work together

By showing respect and kindness, we can focus on what matters most, working together to give every patient the best chance.

🕷️ What Does a Paralysis Tick Look Like?

The paralysis tick (Ixodes holocyclus) is a small, eight-legged arachnid, about 3–5mm long. Its appearance changes depending on whether it has fed:
🐾 Unfed ticks are pale, almost whitish
🐾 As they feed, they swell and can turn bluish or light grey

Even small ticks can be dangerous, so always check your pets carefully during tick season!

🕷️ Tick Paralysis – Know the Signs in Cats

Cats can be affected by tick paralysis too! Keep an eye out for these symptoms:
🐾 Weakness or wobbly movements
🐾 Loss of appetite
🐾 Changes in meowing or voice
🐾 Labored breathing
🐾 Progressive paralysis (often starting in the hind legs)
🐾 Dilated pupils or weak reflexes
🐾 Gagging or difficulty swallowing

⚠️ This is a medical emergency! If you notice any of these signs, seek veterinary care immediately – early treatment can save your cat’s life.

🕷️ How to Check Your Dog for Ticks

Keep your pup safe this tick season by doing a thorough check:
🐾 Run your fingertips through their coat at skin level, feeling for any bumps
🐾 Start at the head and neck – don’t forget their ears and around the mouth
🐾 Check their front legs and paws, including between the toes
🐾 Move along the chest, belly, back, tail, and hind legs
🐾 Remove their collar to inspect for any ticks hiding underneath

Regular checks help catch ticks early and keep your furry friend safe!

At AES Jindalee we have been inundated with stray cats & kittens. We do our best to work with the public, council and local foster groups to reunite them with their owners or find their forever homes, however this can mean they stay in our clinic for a very long time. When adopting a cat, please ensure they are microchipped so if they go missing, we can reunite you with your best friend a lot easier 🐈
