Gastric Dilatation–Volvulus (GDV) is a life‑threatening emergency where a dog’s stomach fills with gas and twists 180–360 degrees, cutting off blood supply to vital organs.

🐕 Who’s at risk?
GDV most commonly affects large, deep‑chested breeds (like Great Danes, German Shepherds, and Standard Poodles), but small dogs can be affected in rare cases too.

✅ How can you reduce the risk?
• Feed smaller meals more frequently instead of one large daily meal
• Limit large amounts of water immediately after eating
• Avoid exercise 1 hour before and after meals
• If your dog eats quickly or gulps air, use a slow‑feeder bowl
• Consider a preventative gastropexy at the time of desexing for deep‑chested breeds (can reduce GDV risk by over 90%)

Know the signs of GDV and seek emergency veterinary care immediately if you’re concerned.

Happy ! 🌏

Animal health takes a team, and we see that teamwork in action every single day.

In the fast‑paced world of emergency veterinary care, it takes skill, trust, and collaboration to deliver life‑saving care when it matters most. Today, we proudly celebrate and thank our incredible veterinarians, vet nurses, animal attendants, and client care representatives who show up with compassion and expertise around the clock.

From performing critical surgeries in the middle of the night, to soothing pets in distress, supporting worried owners, and keeping our hospitals running seamlessly — every role is essential, and every team member makes a difference.

💙 Thank you for your dedication, resilience, and unwavering commitment. We couldn’t do what we do without you.

Caring for animals also means protecting the planet they depend on 🌏

This Earth Day, we'd like to celebrate sustainability becoming a bigger part of how we work. Across AES, our teams are taking meaningful action:
♻️ Rethinking waste and improving recycling
🌱 Switching to compostable and eco‑friendly products
💧 Reviewing water and energy use
🤝 Partnering with organisations like Vets for Climate Action

These small, practical changes add up and help reduce our environmental footprint while continuing to deliver the highest standard of care.

We’re proud to be building a greener future for our patients, our communities and the planet we all share 🌿

🚫 Cats must NEVER be given flea or tick products made for dogs.

Cats are extremely sensitive to permethrin and pyrethrin, common ingredients in many tick products. That’s why cat-specific products contain much lower doses.

Cats can be overexposed by:
⚠️ Using dog flea/tick products on a cat
⚠️ Grooming or cuddling closely with a dog treated with these products
⚠️ Being overdosed with a cat flea/tick treatment

Common signs of toxicity include:
• Ear flicking
• Twitching or muscle tremors
• Loss of coordination
• Seizures
• Drooling, panting
• Vomiting or diarrhoea

🚑 What to do?
If symptoms are mild, wash the product off your cat’s coat using dishwashing detergent, dry them, and take them to the vet in a dark, quiet carrier. If your cat is twitching violently or having seizures, do not wash them, and instead take them straight to the vet immediately.

✅ Always double‑check that flea and tick products are cat-safe before using them.

If your dog found the chocolate eggs first… don't panic, but do act fast.

With the Easter weekend just beginning, chances are there's already chocolate stashed around the house, and your pet may be one step ahead of you.

But not all chocolate is created equal. The higher the cocoa content, the more toxic it is for your pet. Cocoa powder, baking and dark chocolate pose the greatest risk.

Your pet's size and the amount consumed also play a big role in how serious exposure can be, so if you're ever unsure, don't wait.

Animal Emergency Service is open 24 hours a day throughout the Easter long weekend, so help is always available when you need it.

Wishing you and your pets a safe and happy Easter!

Hitting the road with your pet this Easter?

Make sure your car is road‑trip ready and safe for your pets.

Unsecured pets aren’t just at risk in a crash. They can injure you too. Make every journey safe with these two popular options:

💺 Seatbelt Harness
Perfect for dogs who love the view. Keeps them secure without sacrificing comfort.

🚗 Travel Crate
Ideal for cats, small dogs or anxious pets. A cosy enclosed space that prevents roaming.

Always choose crash-tested gear for maximum protection.

Safe travels for you and your furry co-pilot!

As comes to an end, here’s one last reminder to stay vigilant about the hidden household hazards that can put our pets at risk.

Common household poisons to watch out for:
❄️ Antifreeze (ethylene glycol)
🍬 Sugar-free sweeteners (xylitol)
💊 Human medicines
🐀 Rat bait (anticoagulants)
💐 Lilies
🪰 Insecticides (permethrin)
🫧 Cleaning products (benzalkonium chloride)
🧴 Bleach

Signs of possible poisoning include:
Vomiting, drooling, wobbliness, swelling around the mouth, unusual body temperature, muscle twitches or tremors, difficulty breathing, seizures, or collapse.

If your pet has been poisoned, immediately remove them from the source of the poison and call your vet for advice, even if your pet seems fine.
