To say that yoga has grown in popularity over the past few decades would certainly
be an understatement.
Yoga has exploded in its popularity, and in the last financial year it was estimated that over 1.5 million people aged over 15 years old in Australia participated in yoga.
In 2014 the United Nations officially declared June 21st “International Yoga Day”
following India’s prime minister, Narendra Modi’s proposal for a collective
recognition of yoga; to not only reinstate yoga as uniquely Indian, but to also
promote the core values of the practice globally.
At the heart of this ancient practice is the desire to unite with the unchanging truth that is pure joy discovered through Self-knowledge.
Mindful movement is a wonderful catalyst for observation and reflection. So on this
International Day of Yoga, we’d love to hear from you in the comments below about
how your experience of the physical forms of yoga practice has enriched your
connection and awareness of your self.
“When we first started teaching yoga 22 years ago, Core
Yoga West End was one of the first “studios” that was a premise purely designed for
yoga practise in south Brisbane. Coming from a dance
background and a love of movement, our goal was to help students
explore nourishing yoga movement practices that connected them with themselves,
which inturn provided a safe environment to explore introspective practises like
breathing awareness, meditation, and mindful self-compassion. It was an inspiration
that grew and flourished, enabling us to share authentic yoga practises, helping
thousands of people move with ease and insight, relax, reduce pain, improve their
function and enjoy a sustainable lifestyle medicine in our modern world.
Many practitioners fear that recent trends water down the heart of yoga. However, if these varied
expressions of the essence of yoga provide a wider accessibility, inturn supporting the health of our communities, then the true nature of yoga will still continue to shine.”
Thank you to all of our teachers and those before them 🙏🏽
