While swelling doesn’t generally pose a significant health risk, if symptoms persist for a period of time you should consider consulting with a doctor.

What are the main causes of swollen ankles?
Excess weight
Prolonged periods of standing, or alternatively prolonged periods of immobility (ie plane trips)
Taking estrogen or testosterone boosters
Certain medications such as blood pressure tablets or antidepressants (tricyclics or MAO inhibitors)
Steroids
Natural changes during a woman’s menstrual cycle
Pregnancy and preeclampsia (pregnancy condition which causes high blood pressure)
Sprain
Leg infections
Venous insufficiency / varicose veins (resulting in blood not being pumped adequately via the veins)
Injury
Cirrhosis

At The Varicose Vein Clinic we offer a range of treatments to help combat varicose veins, which could help you to combat swollen ankles.

During your ultrasound, blue signals healthy upward flow, while red indicates backward flow.

Backward flow lasting over 0.5 seconds meets the diagnostic criteria for venous incompetence, showing that blood is pooling in the vein rather than moving upward.

Ultrasound gives us a very clear indication as to what is going on in your legs and that's why we perform it at every consultation.

"Are these worth trying?" Here's our doctor's take! Herbs and tablets may stave off symptoms at best but treatment is the only way to stop the pressure from incompetent veins that leads to chronic venous disease.

Solitude + Nature + Walking ⛰️ 🌳 🚶Dr Paul shares some thoughts during his 6 day, 70km walk through Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park in Tasmania.

What do you like to do in your spare time? We'd love to know!

What a vein doctor does in his spare time... walk 🚶‍♂️

Here's some POV of Dr Paul's 6 day, 70km walk through Cradle Mountain - Lake St Clair National Park.

Challenging conditions, stunning scenery.

We hope this inspires you too to get out and walk for prevention of varicose veins and post treatment. One foot in front of the other, that's all there is to it.

Evidence that Dr Paul practices what he preaches and also walks daily! Sometimes for 6 days straight 🚶‍♂️

He recently visited Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park, Tasmania as part of a medical wellbeing workshop for doctors. It was all about improving mental health and wellbeing, and what better place to do that in the great outdoors!

Dr Paul hopes this inspires you to get out and walk for varicose vein prevention and post treatment.

Your Vein Experts

The Varicose Vein Clinics treat one thing: leg veins

Here at The Varicose Vein Clinic, we have created a unique environment in which we can provide the most comprehensive assessment and treatment, tailored to your individual needs.

Our expertise has developed in the specialised nature of our treatment. And our clinical expertise is not diluted by offering many different treatments for many different things.

A large percentage of patients who have had surgery on their veins may require further treatment within five years, all of which can involve hospital admission, general anaesthetic, bandaged legs and a six week recovery period. Our non-surgical techniques allow for no hospital admission, no general anaesthetic and no prolonged painful recovery period. If you have had previous surgery, you will want to avoid this in particular!
