📆It’s Brain Injury Awareness Week and HCQ will be showing its support of those impacted by brain injury at the Flourish and Thrive Expo this Friday 22 August at Apex Park, Centenary Lakes, Morayfield Road, Caboolture from 9am-1pm.
👉Hosted by The Brain Awareness Centre, Brain Injury Group and The Brain Injury Community, the event will provide expert insights on brain injury awareness, tips on prevention and safety, resources for survivors and families, and advocacy for better policies in support of this year’s campaign to call for change.
ℹThe theme of Brain Injury Awareness Week this year is ‘Invisible disabilities deserve visible change’. Brain injury is often unseen but deeply impacts lives. It intersects with domestic and family violence, homelessness, and the justice system, yet remains misunderstood and overlooked.
HCQ is adding its voice to the call to change that by raising our voices, challenging outdated systems, and pushing for real, visible change for those living with brain injury. It starts with a conversation, sharing the message and getting involved.

HCQ supports Dental Health Week 2025 and the important messages from The Australian Dental Association that encourage good oral health development from newborn to adult.

This week is all about the importance of children’s oral health milestones and helping parents and caregivers understand what they need to do to help their kids “reach every S-milestone". The 5 key stages are:
1. Suckling and Feeding: How babies feed can affect their teeth, jaws and future bite.
2. Smiling: baby teeth start showing around 6m so, too, do their wonderful toothy smiles.
3. Salivating: Saliva helps protect children’s teeth – it’s an important element.
4. Speech: healthy teeth help kids form words and speak clearly
5. Self-care: When kids take the rein of their own oral health care, they should have the basics in place: brushing twice a day, flossing at night and regular dental visits.

Critically, as kids grow habits like brushing twice a day, flossing at night (to clean between teeth) and regular dental visits will ensure their oral healthcare is the best it can be.

Taking your young child to the dentist before or around their first birthday and every 6-12 months after that ensures they are familiar with the environment, feel comfortable with dental care and problems can be identified early.

It's Dental Health Week and HCQ is spreading the word about this year’s campaign which is focused on children reaching every milestone on their smile journey.
The “reach every S-milestone” recognises the key stages of a child’s oral health development: suckling, smiling, speaking and learning how to care for their own teeth.
It’s about supporting healthy oral healthcare habits for life, and when these habits are started early, they will be retained across the life cycle.
But this week is also about adults, parents and carers learning more about how these small everyday habits can shape a healthy smile for the rest of a child’s life, because falling behind on oral healthcare habits does happen. When our oral health care is poor, oral and general health outcomes are adversely affected.

📢HAVE YOUR SAY in diabetes foot care services provided in rural Queensland.
Invitation to join a steering committee working with researchers as part of the QFeet Study. ⏳Submit Expression of Interest by 8 August 2025

👩‍⚕️Queensland Health has launched 4 new Community Foot Care Hubs to support people in rural and remote areas living with diabetes-related foot wounds. These telehealth clinics connect local patients and providers with specialist teams in Brisbane, Townsville and Cairns - offering faster, closer-to-home care and helping reduce serious complications like hospitalisation or amputation.

The QFeet Study, led by researchers at QUT’s Australian Centre for Health Services Innovation (AusHSI), is supporting and expanding these hubs.

As a consumer representative selected to join the steering committee, you will be expected to:
• attend 3-4 meetings per year (online or in person)
• share your lived experience to guide the project
• help make communication materials more consumer-friendly
• ideally have connections to relevant community or health organisations.

📆Appointments are for up to 2 years (with possible extension), and remuneration and ongoing support will be provided.

📄Health Consumers Queensland (HCQ) is preparing a submission to the Queensland Health independent review of Stage 1 and 2 hormone therapies in Queensland’s public paediatric gender services.

✅HCQ previously informed the 2023-24 Queensland Children’s Gender Service – External Clinical Service Evaluation (the Evaluation).
✅To complete our current submission, we would like to hear from consumers and their families or support networks who have lived experience with public paediatric (child and adolescent) gender services, namely your experience in being supported to access or receive stage 1 and/or 2 hormone therapies.

🙏HCQ recognises the sensitive nature of this health matter and the very personal experiences that are unique to all consumers, families and local communities.
