At the end of last term Rockhampton QHEP celebrated with a Master Chef cook off. Long stay student Rylan Angel loved to cook and enjoyed cooking during his stay. It was decided that a much needed cook off was in need as Rylan was a little master chef in the kitchen. Rylan selected what recipes he wanted to cook, and Melinda (Senior Teacher) did the same.
There was a secret tasting of the items cooked and the admin and nursing staff scored based on skill, taste and presentation. Items cooked were apple rose scrolls (Rylan), carrot cake (Rylan), savoury scrolls and quiche. It was a unanimous vote with Rylan scoring majority 10's for his delicious carrot cake. He even had some of the staff asking for the recipe. Rylan was presented with an award to celebrate his success. He proudly displayed his certificate above his bed for all to see.

To celebrate the amazing effort the young people at EDDP have put in during term 3— from classwork and assignments to exams — we came together for a special end-of-term celebration! This event was extra special as we also farewelled three of our young people who are transitioning back to their base schools. The theme this term was Masquerade. Our young people decorated the tables, crafted their own masks, and even baked delicious red velvet cupcakes and passionfruit tarts to share with parents, clinicians, and the education team.
What a fantastic way to finish the term!

This term at EDDP, the young people explored mindful brain breaks — creative pauses that boost focus and wellbeing. Brain breaks help learning by giving the mind a rest and reducing overload (Cognitive Load Theory), while mindful brain breaks regulate emotions and build awareness (Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction). Students experimented with Zen Tangles, optical illusions, Kusama’s dots, Matisse-inspired collages, and Hundertwasser’s flowing watercolours, creating their own “Mindful Hexagons.” These artworks became tools for calm, focus, and flow (Csikszentmihalyi), and at the end of term, the students collaborated to bring them together in a vibrant group piece that represents their shared creativity and connection.

Primary students from the Virtual Hospital Education Program (VHEP) recently got their science goggles on and logged in for some dazzling demonstrations about light and refraction.

VHEP teachers Miss Karen and Miss Janelle cooked up a brilliant plan to engage students in science while they recover at home. With Miss Bec running online science lessons every Friday as preparation, the stage was perfectly set for the grand finale demonstration!

Joining forces with Mr Tim Barclay, Head of Department, Small Schools Science from the new Queensland Virtual Academy (QVA), students discovered how water, concave and convex shapes can bend light, how refraction works across different surfaces, and even got a front-row seat to the science behind a solar eclipse.

What a valuable collaboration between two specialised online services, delivering engaging lessons to students who can’t be in their regular classrooms. A huge thank you to everyone who made it possible — look out for more science in Term 4!

We’re excited to announce that our new program in North Queensland officially opened last Monday, 8th September. This new program is a residential site to support 13-18 years olds with alcohol and other drugs treatment programs.

We were officially welcomed by Traditional Owners, Neville Reys and Peter Hyde with a wonderful smoking ceremony.

This 10-bed residential rehabilitation centre will provide specialist programs to young people and their families in FNQ. Young people accessing this service will have on-site learning as well as therapeutic, recreational and cultural healing programs.

The first young people will commence at the site in October.

Since the middle of the term the primary school teachers from our Virtual Hospital Education Program (VHEP) have been running a weekly online assembly — and they’ve been an absolute hit! Each week centres around a new theme, with lots of learning and laughs. There’s always a joke of the week from the teachers (and sometimes from our Principal Mr John), quick quizzes, quirky fun facts, and chances for students to jump in and share something special about themselves. Of course, we can’t forget the highlight: celebrating everyone’s hard work with the Student of the Week award!

These assemblies are open to all our VHEP primary students — the more, the merrier. A big round of applause to Miss Janelle and Miss Karen, who sprinkle the sessions with just the right mix of fun and care to keep student wellbeing and connection front and centre.

Harrison, Elora, Kayla and Bethany from the RoboKings @ Chancellor State College joined our Queensland Children’s Hospital School classroom at SCUH for some incredible robotic adventures.
These inspiring young leaders led a class session where students explored the curriculum through Digital Technologies, learning the basics of programming pathways - and even linking coding with art!
The RoboKings also visited the ward and had a wonderful one-on-one session with Hannah, who was absolutely delighted by the experience.
A huge thank you to the RoboKings team and Chancellor State College for sharing your knowledge, energy and passion with our students.

Shrek, Surface Area, and Sewing... Oh My!

Students at the Robina Hospital Campus have been busy bringing their learning to life in the classroom. They have used hands-on maths exploring surface area and volume, to diving deep into a character analysis of Shrek. Their creativity hasn’t stopped there – they’ve also been painting masterpieces, stitching up some sewing projects and tickling the ivories bringing the sounds of Bach to the classroom.

We love seeing their enthusiasm and the unique ways they connect with each subject!

Kinaesthetic Learning in Action at Logan AMHU

Over the past few weeks, students at Logan AMHU have been immersed in a series of dynamic, hands-on learning experiences.

From turning Maths into something tangible—measuring everyday objects to calculate surface area and volume—to tackling a real-world challenge: what’s the most cost-effective way to post a parcel? These practical tasks have made abstract concepts meaningful and memorable.

In our sustainability unit, we took learning a step further by creating recycled paper from shredded classroom documents. Blended into pulp and embedded with sunflower seeds, the paper became a canvas for affirmations and positive messages. The idea? Once planted, the paper—and the sentiments—could grow and blossom into something beautiful.

Book Week at QCH!

Artwork from the Yr 11/12 classroom at QCHS with a Book Week activity. We explored Australian flora, and the students painted one side in black and white and the other side in colour. They then put a string in the middle and glued the sides together.
Beautiful work!

Book Week Celebrations at QCH

The QCHS campus celebrated Book Week in our P-12 classrooms and wards. Embracing the theme, ‘Book an Adventure’ we explored old favourites as well as the 2025 short-listed books in a true celebration of literature. Vocabulary-rich, text-based discussions could be heard in classrooms and student responses to texts were created in artistic forms including painting, sketching and woven word form.

School in Hospital

Queensland Children’s Hospital School is located across several campuses in and around Brisbane’s hospital districts. Our two campus at the Queensland Children’s Hospital (QCH) cater for students from Prep to Year 12, and are found on level 8 of the QCH and on level 1 of the Salmon Building.

If you anticipate that your child will be absent from their own school for four or more school days, then they are eligible for a school service at QCH School. This service applies not only to inpatients, but to their siblings as well.

Get in touch with us if you would like to access the school service we provide.
