The young people at EDDP were discussing their favourite book and book series from when they were children and unanimously decided it was the Rainbow Magic series by Daisy Meadows and Georgie Ripper. The "Rainbow Magic" series consists of over 200 books, organized into various themed sets, with the first book published in 2003. For Book week they each came dressed as their favourite Character, delighting in wings, glitter, wands, magic and storytelling. Oslo our therapy dog was the star of Book Week dressed as Heather from book 7 of the series ‘Heather the Violet Fairy’ He was very excited.

In one of his recent Kindy sessions, delivered on ward at Queensland Children's Hospital, Charlie engaged in an investigation to discover how he could cause colour to move across the surface of milk. The science behind creating mixtures and chemical reactions was explored by Charlie as he experimented with household materials. Charlie displayed delight and wonder as he observed the effects, patterns, and colours that occurred when he floated drops of food colour on top of milk and then carefully touched the food colouring with dish soap. Charlie's developing understandings of scientific processes was communicated by him when he responded to his Mum's comment that what she saw him doing was magic. Charlie replied by saying, "No Mum. It is science!"

Space travel, living on Mars - this really is rocket science! Sunny and Nick visited our QCHS campus. They work alongside explorers, here on earth as they climb Mt Everest as well as budding astronauts who are training to live on Mars.
Noah, Elias, Frayah and Zander had fun learning all about asteroids as Scientist Sunny dropped objects onto various surfaces showing us how asteroids impact the surface of various types planets.

Science Week at the Rockhampton Hospital Paediatric Ward- We decorated the ward for science week and everyone enthusiastically got involved in completing some wonderful experiments. We made the space themed window clingy's which were to act as the Micro Organisms in the universe. Discussed vocabulary like interstellar clouds, nebulae and molecular clouds. Students also created straw space rockets. We completed a trial test out of three as to whose went the furthest. We then measured the students trials and discussed which of their space rockets went the furthest and what we could do to improve the design or make them go further.

Students of Adolescent Mental Health Unit (AMHU) Sunshine Coast explored an acid–base indicator reaction by painting turmeric mixed with hand sanitizer over drawings made with bicarbonate of soda.
Turmeric’s curcumin is yellow in neutral or acidic conditions but turns red-brown when sodium bicarbonate produces hydroxide ions (OH⁻), raising the pH. This shift happens because the higher pH changes curcumin’s molecular structure, altering how it absorbs light. Adding vinegar or lemon juice neutralises the OH ions, reversing the colour change. The YP deepened their understanding of pH, chemical equilibrium, molecular structure, and reversible reactions.

At our Early Education Program, we deliver early childhood experiences, where children thrive! This week, our program welcomed a special visit from some native Australian animals. As the animals were gently handled, children were supported to feel their textures with brave hands, observe their movements, and ask questions. It’s images like these that remind us why early education is so important! Where joy, curiosity, and connection lay the foundation for lifelong learning.

Manaia in year 2, from the Ipswich Hospital Education Program celebrated Science Week by exploring ‘exoplanets’ with ward teacher Keryn. An exoplanet is a planet outside of our solar system. Manaia imagined a life-sustaining exoplanet with animals, water, and plant life. She created completed a fact file and created a model of her exoplanet. Great work Manaia!

Emersyn, a Yr 1 student, sure is measuring up!
She used plastic clips to measure sea items and creatures and then wrote the numeral for each. After she measured 3 items, she ordered them from shortest to longest. Emersyn spends part of her school time in the QCHS classroom and part learning from home with her QCHS online teacher. Both teachers work closely together to create the best possible learning experiences for Emersyn, giving her the best of both worlds—face-to-face lessons with her teacher and peers, and engaging online lessons when she is at home. A great example of QCHS programs working collaboratively for the benefit of their students.

School in Hospital

Queensland Children’s Hospital School is located across several campuses in and around Brisbane’s hospital districts. Our two campus at the Queensland Children’s Hospital (QCH) cater for students from Prep to Year 12, and are found on level 8 of the QCH and on level 1 of the Salmon Building.

If you anticipate that your child will be absent from their own school for four or more school days, then they are eligible for a school service at QCH School. This service applies not only to inpatients, but to their siblings as well.

Get in touch with us if you would like to access the school service we provide.
