At EDDP, our Gratitude Tree has become an integral part of our classroom. Each Monday, students write their expressions of gratitude and hang them on the tree, watching it grow alongside their reflections and their realisation that even in difficult times, there is still so much to be thankful for. This weekly practice not only nurtures positivity but also helps build resilience by encouraging students to pause, reframe challenges, and recognise the small but important moments of strength in their lives. As the year comes to a close, they take these notes down, cut them up, soak them, and transform them into sheets of handmade paper—capturing our collective gratitude and creating something meaningful from all they have appreciated throughout the year.

Last week our students combined creativity with conservation by painting vibrant Christmas beetles while learning about the species’ worrying decline; through exploring the beetle’s life cycle and understanding how urbanisation, pesticides and climate change threaten their survival, students gained a deeper appreciation of this iconic Australian insect and the importance of protecting it so future generations can once again enjoy the magic of Christmas beetles on warm summer nights.

🎄✨ Christmas craft magic!
We spent today making decorations, colouring in our shrinky d***s, and then watching in total wonder as they transformed in the oven. Such a simple activity, but the smiles and excitement made it feel truly magical. Merry Christmas ❤️✨

Nailed it! Cake Challenge- Student Creativity on Display

Yannanda Day Program- Toowoomba has been buzzing with excitement thanks to student-led interest in the popular baking show Nailed It! After many conversations about the series, we decided to bring the fun into our own classroom with a Nailed It Cake Challenge.

To kick off the project, two groups were formed, students explored the iconic Women’s Weekly Birthday Cake Book. After group discussions the classic duck cake, made famous again thanks to its appearance in the TV show Bluey, and a bright pink pig cake were the chosen cake designs.

Over two days the challenge came to life; on day 1 students baked their cakes and on day 2 they were challenged to decorating their creations. Day 2 saw tremendous displays of teamwork, creativity and resilience. A change of classrooms meant we suddenly had less space and limited equipment. Instead of seeing this as a setback, students rose to the challenge working collaboratively and adapting their processes, problem-solving every step of the way.

Despite the hurdles, both groups produced amazing final creations. The duck cake and pig cake were decorated with care, precision and plenty of inventive thinking. Students displayed great teamwork, resilience, adaptability, problem solving and refined creative decision making; all lifelong transferable skills.

We couldn’t be prouder of the way students embraced the challenge and supported one another. Please enjoy the photos of our very own Nailed It! cake masterpieces made with laughter, persistence, and a whole lot of icing!

What an incredible opportunity for our virtual students!

Last week, Mr Tim Barclay from Queensland Virtual Academy delivered a hands-on online science experiment, wrapping up a term of learning about UV light, pH changes, and the effects of heat on different chemicals. This collaboration between the Queensland Children’s Hospital School’s virtual program (VHEP) and QVA allows students recovering at home to access high-quality, exciting science lessons culminating in real time science experiments.

A fantastic way to keep curiosity alive and learning thriving! Thank you to Miss Janelle and Miss Karen, VHEP’s primary teachers, and especially to Mr Tim from QVA.

✨ Playdough, Christmas Spirit & Community Support! ✨
Last week our young people enthusiastically created four batches of delightful, glittery playdough — and showed off some outstanding kneading skills along the way! They then packaged everything up into 21 bags for the upcoming Christmas Stall. 🎄💫

We also want to acknowledge the incredible work of the Chaplain at Townsville Community Learning Centre, whose contribution to the school community through the Chaplaincy Program is truly invaluable. From visiting classes to sing and play guitar with students, to running a breakfast program with toast and fruit, offering hospital visits to unwell students, coordinating arts and crafts, and even organising refurbished laptops for the 10 graduating Year 12s this year — the positive impact is enormous.

We are proud and pleased to support this wonderful program and the difference it continues to make. 💛👏

Cool Maths in Prep! 🦕
We’ve been having fun exploring fractions and percentages as part of our Prep V9 Maths activities. This week, Ruben worked with Steve to sort a collection of dinosaurs into groups by colour. After sorting, he discovered he had four groups, which led to a great discussion about how fractions can also be shown as percentages.
Ruben then created his very own pie chart, showing each dinosaur group as both a fraction and a percent, a fantastic way to visualise his thinking!
Love seeing our young learners making real-world maths connections!

Last Monday and Tuesday, we were thrilled to welcome Melissa Clark, our Kindy Pilot Co-ordinator from QCHS, to the Rockhampton program! 🎉
Melissa spent time with Melinda, sharing professional development and diving into our brand-new Kindy Program launching at the start of next year. And guess what? Melinda is buzzing with excitement to bring this fresh, engaging program to life!
With fantastic new resources already organised and ready to go, 2025 is shaping up to be an incredible year for our little learners. Stay tuned—big things are coming! 🚀📚🌈

In our individual project time during science this Semester, AIUDS students utilised microscopes to; look at cells in plants, observe microorganisms like bacteria and protozoa, study tissue samples (e.g. onion skin), study pond water samples and identify living organisms, observe crystals or small particles and to study materials or fibres under magnification. We were also very engaged in our STILE unit ‘Active Earth’ and worked collaboratively in groups to participate in hands on science experiments relating to the Active earth unit. Our favourite activities were building an earthquake resistant spaghetti structure, modelling the rock cycle, relative dating and crystal growth.

Community Connections and Partnerships 🌿✨
This year, we were proud to connect with the Townsville Community Learning Centre’s Community Education Counsellor and take part in their NAIDOC Week celebrations, including the Deadly Door Designs Competition.
Our young people jumped right into the design and creation process—producing three incredible door designs that reflected the powerful themes of Strength, Legacy, and Vision. 💪🌱👁️
What a fantastic way to celebrate culture, creativity, and community! ❤️💛🖤

To celebrate World Kindness Day (13th of November), our young people in the Logan Hospital AMHU classroom, rolled up their sleeves and got creative in the kitchen! Together, we made fresh homemade pasta from scratch — a fun, hands-on activity that brought everyone together.

The best part? Sharing our delicious pasta dishes with our wonderful nursing staff and fellow young people on the ward - as a gesture of kindness and gratitude.
We had so much fun learning new cooking skills, working as a team, and experimenting with flavours. We’re already looking forward to trying out new pasta shapes and sauces in the weeks ahead!

School in Hospital

Queensland Children’s Hospital School is located across several campuses in and around Brisbane’s hospital districts. Our two campus at the Queensland Children’s Hospital (QCH) cater for students from Prep to Year 12, and are found on level 8 of the QCH and on level 1 of the Salmon Building.

If you anticipate that your child will be absent from their own school for four or more school days, then they are eligible for a school service at QCH School. This service applies not only to inpatients, but to their siblings as well.

Get in touch with us if you would like to access the school service we provide.
