This month we are shining a light on Hazel Boyce (she/they), who has recently returned from Hawai’i where they connected deeply to the ‘āina (land) and also studied more Lomilomi at Ho’omana on Maui.

Mahalo Nui to the ‘āina of the sovereign kingdom of Hawaii. I am beyond grateful to have spent the past two months talking story & breathing in the powerful mana on Kauai, the Big Island, Maui & Oahu. Since returning to Naarm, Melbourne, I have often found I have no words for the intricate beauty of these phenomenal, powerful islands. Maybe some words about my own journey will have to do for now…

So deeply honoured to have taught these special souls Spiritual Hawaiian Lomilomi Massage in Naarm recently, and to have had the most amazing assistant Lizzie Doyle by my side, supporting us all 🌈🫶🏽🌈

These 6-day trainings are huge, and it’s always incredible to witness people come out the other side stronger in their connection to themselves and to Spirit, with their hearts wide open and ready to share Aloha with the world 💗

🌱🌎🌱 MĀLAMA ‘ĀINA - Caring for the Earth with Hawaiian Wisdom…

There is a Hawaiian proverb that says:
“He aliʻi ka ʻāina, he kauwā ke kanaka.”
The land is chief, and the people are its servants.

This ʻōlelo noʻeau (wise saying) reminds us of the sacred relationship between people and the land. In Hawaiian wisdom, the ʻāina (earth) is not something we own—it is a chief, an ancestor, and a source of life. To live well is to mālama ʻāina, to care for the land with respect, humility, and aloha.

LIVING IN LŌKAHI: BALANCE FOR OUR TIMES…

In the old ways of Hawai‘i, life was lived in harmony. People cared for the land and the land cared for them. Nothing was wasted, and everyone’s needs were met—from the youngest child to the oldest elder. Even with limited resources, there was abundance, because people lived in right relationship with one another, with the ‘āina (land), with the elements, and with the Divine.

This state of Lōkahi—oneness, balance, and interconnection—was the foundation of life. It meant there were no dividing lines between one person and another, nor between human beings and Spirit. Everything was woven together by Aloha: love, compassion, sacred breath, and presence.

Aka – The Invisible Threads That Connect Us

In Hawaiian wisdom, aka are the subtle energetic threads that weave everything in the universe together. You might imagine them like fine strands of light, connecting you to the people you love, the places you spend time, and even the thoughts and emotions you carry. Though invisible to the eye, they are deeply felt by the heart and spirit.

Through these threads, energy is always moving - between your body, mind, emotions, spirit, and the world around you. Just as rivers carry water, aka carry memory, intention, and feeling. They connect us to our ʻohana (family by blood or by choice), to nature, to our ancestors, and to Akua (Spirit)

WHEN THE THREADS ARE CLEAR - When aka are open and clear, our mana (life force) flows freely. This brings harmony, clarity, balance, and a deeper sense of aloha. We feel more connected, present, and at ease - able to give and receive energy in healthy, life-giving ways.

WHEN THE THREADS ARE BLOCKED - At times, though, these threads can become tangled or heavy. Stress, tension, or unresolved emotions may cling to them, slowing the natural flow of energy. We might feel drained, stuck, or disconnected from ourselves or others.

This is where the practice of Spiritual Hawaiian Lomilomi Massage can help. In lomilomi, practitioners honour the presence of aka, supporting the body, mind, and spirit to realign with the natural flow of life. By restoring openness, energy begins to move again, leaving the receiver feeling lighter, clearer, and more connected.
