Coming with Open Heart International to operate with, teach, and encourage the team at Port Moresby General Hospital is a really rewarding experience. Each patient benefits, and more will benefit from the team having more expertise, experience and encouragement.

I’m going to Papua New Guinea as part of an Open Heart International team. The team works with the local team at Port Moresby General Hospital to provide cardiac surgery for the people of PNG who would otherwise struggle with shortened lives from heart failure. In the short term, we’ll be doing surgery for people who need it now. In the long term, we’re helping the local team develop a self sustaining home grown cardiac surgery program. I donate my time and skills to both do and teach surgery. Your donations will go to Open Heart International to continue to fund these trips, helping the people of PNG both receive and give the gift of cardiac surgery.

It is with a mixture of surprise and gratitude that I received the President’s Award. I got involved in the trainees meeting because I appreciated the efforts of Dr Peter Skillington and Dr Andrew Cochrane who ran the trainees meeting before me, and from which I gained so much as a trainee. The reward from teaching the trainees over the last seven years far outweighed the efforts it took to convene the meeting. Finding creative ways to teach and overcome challenges (including Covid) added to the fun! I thought these awards were for surgeons at the end of their careers! Hopefully I have decades of work ahead of me that will deserve recognition!

Thank you Dr Granger, for the honour. Thank you to the Society for entrusting me with the trainee meetings. Thank you to the indispensable Mr Nick Danes who always managed to track me down. Thank you to our industry partners whose contributions of money, time, product and wetlab set up helped our trainees learn their craft. Thank you to the trainees who made me a better surgeon and person through the challenge of teaching. And... thank you to Mrs Cole for seeing the reward that teaching was, and supporting me!

Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, Adelaide, for interviews for the Cardiothoracic training program. Fascinating diversity of candidates who dream of being a Cardiothoracic surgeon, and of the surgeons who volunteer to interview. Training surgeons is voluntary, so days like this are run on the altruism of my fellow surgeons.

I have had the pleasure and honor of convening the Cardiothoracic Trainees meetings for the last six years. Everything from novel online ways of teaching from NZ to WA, to face to face multi day meetings. It has made me a better surgeon, and better person and I am grateful to all the trainees for that gift. Thank you to faculty, speakers, RACS, ANZSCTS, our corporate sponsors, and to Mr Nick Danes who made it all happen behind the scenes. Good luck to Drs Robinson and Edelman as they take the meeting on to the next level.
