This week 13th-19th of Oct 2025 is National Nutrition Week.
This National Nutrition Week theme is love the food you eat aimed at celebrating the joy of food β€” from shopping and preparing to cooking and sharing. When we love what we eat, meals become more than just fuel: they’re delicious, balanced, and mindful moments that nourish us and bring joy to others. Eating becomes a celebration of togetherness β€” a chance to connect, laugh, and share with those we cherish.

If you would like some help with improving nutrition and meal planning a healthy diet book in for an initial consultation.

1. Use Food as Medicine
Eat an unprocessed, whole foods diet. Focus on eating an abundance of seasonal vegetables, lean animal and vegetable proteins, complex carbohydrates, and seasonal fruits. Choose organic whenever possible. Minimize refined sugar, alcohol and caffeine.

2. Stay Hydrated
Water is essential to keep our body functioning optimally. We get rid of most of our toxins through our urine, bowel movements, breathing and sweat. Aim to drink around 2L per day. Staying sufficiently hydrated helps detoxify and flush out toxins from our body, ensures healthy respiratory, digestive and immune function, and maintains good energy levels.

3. Move Your Body
Exercise is one of the most important things you can do for your health. The importance of exercise can be easily overlooked because the effects of not exercising aren’t as immediately obvious as the effects of inadequate eating, drinking or sleeping. However, movement is essential for a thriving body and mind.

Find an activity that gets you breathing harder and your heart beating faster. Exercise outdoors in the sun and fresh air whenever possible!

4. Prioritize Sleep
Support healthy sleep patterns by waking and going to bed at the same time each day. Ensure that you are getting an adequate amount of sleep. Turn off electronic devices after sundown, as blue light interferes with melatonin production. Encourage relaxation by taking an Epsom salt bath, diffusing lavender oil, drinking chamomile tea, or by doing a meditation or breathing exercise to help calm the mind for sleep.

5. Manage Stress
While we can’t change what’s going on in the world, we can change the way we experience it. It is essential to understand your personal stress response and learn effective techniques to manage emotions such as anger, despair, guilt and fear. Utilize practices such as therapy, meditation, yoga, tai chi and breathing exercises to counterbalance the negative effects of stress on your body.

Current statistics show well over 1 million Australians are living with an undiagnosed thyroid disorder. The most recent research in Australia has shown that around 14% of older Australians suffer from a clinically relevant thyroid disorder with 4% having an undiagnosed thyroid disorder.
National studies in 2004 have shown that approximately 50% of Australian children and a similar percentage of pregnant women suffer from iodine deficiency. More recent smaller studies have shown that approximately 10% of pregnant women in Australia suffer from mild hypothyroidism (subclinical) secondary to autoimmune thyroid disease (Hashimoto’s Disease).
Hypothyroidism is the most common thyroid disorder in Australia, affecting around 1 in 33 Australians, women are more likely to be diagnosed than men.

Need support with you thyroid? Make an appointment for a consult and let's work together to improve you health.

What is diabetes and how does is develop?

There are a couple of different types of diabetes - diabetes type 1 (autoimmune), diabetes type 2 (preventable) and gestational diabetes (temporary during gestation).

Type 2 diabetes is a condition in which the body becomes resistant to the normal effects of insulin and gradually loses the capacity to produce enough insulin in the pancreas. The condition has strong genetic risk factors, along with modifiable lifestyle risk factors (diet, lifestyle, exercise).

Type 2 diabetes develops over a long period of time (years). During this period of time insulin resistance starts, this is where the insulin is increasingly ineffective at managing the blood glucose levels. As a result of this insulin resistance, the pancreas responds by producing greater and greater amounts of insulin, to try and achieve some degree of management of the blood glucose levels.
As insulin overproduction occurs over a very long period of time, the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas wear themselves out, so that by the time someone is diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, they have lost 50 – 70% of their insulin-producing cells. This means type 2 diabetes is a combination of ineffective insulin and not enough insulin. Lifestyle changes may be able to slow this process.

How a Naturopath can help?

By working with a naturopath you can develop a holistic and comprehensive plan to manage and improve your diabetes symptoms. Using diet, nutrition, exercise, stress management, sleep management and the addition of herbs or supplement.

Still unsure of how a naturopath can help or curious, call or book an appointment to find out more (link in bio).
