Wet Weather Update – Stay Proactive, Not Reactive

We’re continuing to experience an extended period of wet and mild weather this May. With forecasts showing more rain to come, now is the time to stay calm, stay prepared, and act early.

🧠 Don’t Panic – Be Proactive
While we can’t control the weather, we can control how we prepare. Taking small steps now will help prevent bigger problems later.

βœ… What Proactive Looks Like:
* Check your gutters and drains before the next downpour.
* Secure outdoor items like bins and garden furniture.
* Move valuables off the floor in low-lying areas or garages.
* Speak with neighbours – check in, offer help, share tips.
* Know where to get help – save SES (132 500) and BOM alerts in your phone.

🚫 What Reactive Looks Like:
* Waiting until it’s raining to clear the gutters.
* Rushing to the shops during a storm warning.
*Panicking over forecasts rather than using them to plan.

🧰 Preparedness = Peace of Mind
* Taking a few minutes today to prepare can save stress and property tomorrow. Remember: it’s not about panic – it’s about being ready and looking after ourselves and each other.

πŸ‘‹ Checking on Neighbours
* Reach Out – Knock on their door, call, or send a message to check if they need help.
* Stay Connected – Set up a communication plan in case of emergency.

πŸš— Many Local Roads Are Now Closed – PLEASE Stay Off the Roads!

🌊 Do not drive through floodwaters – Many roads in the local area are now closed due to flooding and debris.
🚨 Emergency services may not be able to reach you if you become trapped.
⚠️ If it’s flooded, forget it!
πŸ“± Check road closures before traveling: QLDTraffic.qld.gov.au

🌧️ Ongoing Rain = Increased Flood Risk 🚧

With continued rain in the area, the risk of localised flooding is increasing. Roads, drains, and low-lying areas may become hazardous.

βœ… Check local conditions before heading out.
πŸš— Never drive through floodwaters – even shallow water can be dangerous.
πŸ“’ Stay updated via your local disaster dashboard or https://qldtraffic.qld.gov.au/
🚫 Avoid all unnecessary travel where possible, this makes the roads safer for our fabulous volunteers to get to those who need it most.

For non-life-threatening flood and storm emergency assistance during severe weather events visit 132500.qld.gov.au, use the SES Assistance QLD App or call 132500

πŸš— Stay Off the Roads – If It’s Flooded, Forget It!
🌊 Do not drive through floodwaters – It only takes 15cm of water to make a car lose control, and 30cm to float away.
πŸ“± Check road closures: QLDTraffic.qld.gov.au

What to Do If the Power Goes Out:
πŸ’‘ Stay Informed – Use a battery-powered radio for updates (ABC 612 AM or your local ABC frequency).
πŸ”‹ Preserve Phone Battery – Use battery-saving mode, turn on airplane mode when not in use, and only check for updates when necessary.
πŸ•― Use Safe Lighting – Battery-powered torches, LED lanterns, or glow sticks are best. If using candles, never leave them unattended.
πŸš— Charge Devices in the Car – If safe to do so, charge your phone in your vehicle (ensure proper ventilation if running the engine).

Food Safety During a Power Outage:
πŸ₯ͺ Eat Perishables First – Consume refrigerated food within 4 hours if the fridge has lost power.
🧊 Keep the Fridge & Freezer Closed – A full freezer stays cold for approximately 48 hours, a half-full freezer for 24 hours.
πŸ›‘ When in Doubt, Throw it Out – If food has been at room temperature for more than 2 hours, do not risk eating it.

Emergency Cooking Options:
πŸ”₯ Gas Stove (if safe to use) – If you have a gas stove, you can still cook meals, but do not use it indoors if there’s a gas leak risk.
πŸ– BBQ or Camp Stove – Can be used OUTDOORS ONLY to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.
πŸ₯„ Non-Perishable Foods – Have easy-to-eat foods like canned goods, muesli bars, etc.

Protecting Pets & Children
🐢 For Pets: Keep them inside in a quiet, familiar space with food and water.
πŸ‘Ά For Children: Keep a flashlight nearby and have comfort items ready (books, toys, etc.).

Look Out for Your Neighbours!
🏑 Check in on elderly neighbours, people with disabilities, or those living alone.
πŸ“ž Stay connected – A quick phone call or message can make a difference.
πŸ’‘ Share resources – If safe, help those who may not have supplies, power, or internet access.
🐢 Check on their pets too – Some may need help keeping animals safe indoors.

What You Need to Do NOW:

πŸ”Ή Secure Loose Items – Bring in or secure outdoor furniture (including the trampoline and plant pots, etc.), bins, and anything that could possibly become a projectile.

🚨 Attention Karana Downs, Mt Crosby & Surrounding Areas 🚨

Please be advised local emergency services and disaster agency management have been working very hard behind the scenes to prepare for the coming weather event. The Moggill SES will have a presence in the area with experienced local SES members on call.

However, please ensure you have essential supplies for at least 3-5 daysβ€”before the event, not after.

πŸš— If you need to be elsewhere in the coming days, now is the time to leave.

Look after yourselves and your neighbours, be kind, and stay patient.

Before the Cyclone
βœ… Prepare an Emergency Kit – Include water, non-perishable food, medications, battery-powered radio, torch, and important documents.
βœ…Fill some water containers with drinking water and fill your baths or sinks with water just in case.
βœ…Gather all of your important documents and keep them handy and ensure they're wrapped in a waterproof satchel/container
βœ…Ensure you have enough prescription drugs on hand and an adequate first aid kit.
βœ…Ensure that your vehicle has a full tank of fuel, you have cash on hand in case of power outages, phones fully charged prior to the storms, extra non perishable foods, batteries for torches and pet food.
βœ… Secure Your Property – Trim trees, tie down loose items, and reinforce windows and doors.
βœ… Know Your Evacuation Plan – Identify safe routes and shelters, and have a plan for pets.

During the Cyclone
⚠️ Stay Indoors & Away from Windows – Strong winds and flying debris can be deadly.
⚠️Identify the safest place in your house to take shelter away from windows in case of windows being blown, objects flying in through your windows or your roof lying off in an extreme situation which hopefully wont be the case.
⚠️Bring your pets inside as they too will most likely be scared.
⚠️Have a pair of solid shoes beside your bed in case you have to get up in the middle of the night to attend to broken windows or glass etc.
⚠️ Listen to Official Warnings – Follow advice from authorities via ABC Radio, BOM, and emergency services.
⚠️ Don't Be Fooled by the Eye – Conditions may seem calm, but dangerous winds can return suddenly.

After the Cyclone
πŸ›‘ Be Cautious Outside – Watch for fallen power lines, unstable trees, and flooding.
πŸ›‘ Check on Neighbours & Community – Help where possible and report any hazards.
πŸ›‘ Avoid Floodwaters – They may contain debris, strong currents, or contamination.

As they do say in the far north, prepare for the worst and hope for the best.
