Olive Express

Olive Express Hop aboard the Olive Express for a cuppa and an unforgettable journey! Our mobile train experience 🚌

26/02/2026

Olive Express has been named a finalist in the SilverEco & Ageing Well International Awards, taking place at the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès in Cannes on 14–15 September 2026.

Three years ago, Olive Express was just an idea sketched on the back of a napkin.

Today, it’s being recognised on an international stage.

What started as a simple belief, that older people deserve joy, dignity and meaningful experiences, has grown into something impacting communities far beyond where we began. Residents are travelling again. Families are reconnecting. Staff have a new tool that actually works in real environments.

And now we’re heading to Europe.

I’m proud. I’m grateful. And honestly, I’m a little amazed at how far this has come.

To every aged care home that backed us early.
To every lifestyle coordinator who took a chance.
To every partner, sponsor and supporter who believed this could work.

This recognition belongs to you as much as it does to us.

From a napkin sketch to Cannes.

We rolled into Odyssey Robina and had 9 News Queensland there with Bruce Paige to film what Olive Express is all about.

Residents climbed aboard our immersive “virtual train” and took a trip through the Swiss Alps without leaving the home. Big views, great sound, lots of smiles, and plenty of chat afterwards.

What we love most is seeing people light up. These journeys break the routine, spark memories, and create real connection between residents, staff, and visiting family.

Today’s “train trip” wasn’t just fun – it was measured. 💛

Independent researchers from the University of Queensland used special sensors and interviews to see what Olive Express journeys do for residents.

Result? Brighter mood, more smiles, more chatting afterwards.

I’ve just spent two days back at BlueCare Yurana, the place where I first started working in aged care, and it honestly felt like coming home.

Walking up the driveway, seeing familiar faces, hearing the same laughter in the corridors… it all came rushing back. We had residents and staff relaxing in the Ritchie chairs, chatting, laughing, “going on holidays” together. The energy was beautiful – lots of smiles, a few happy tears, and so many little moments of connection.

A huge shout-out to Sue, the Lifestyle Coordinator. The care, creativity and sheer hard work she pours into every day is truly humbling. Watching her in action again reminded me why I fell in love with this work in the first place.

Thank you to everyone at my old ward for such a warm welcome and a wonderful two days. Grateful to be part of your story again, even for a little while. 🙏✨

“Can they still go on holiday?”

With Olive Express, the answer is yes – whether a resident is in a day bed, regency chair or wheelchair.

Every journey is designed so everyone can roll on, relax and travel together.

☃️ Minus 7 degrees ❄️ and I loved every second of it. 🙂‍↕️

I was lucky enough to duck up to the northern hemisphere for a week recently, and it really hit me (again) how much travelling somewhere new changes how you feel.

Most of the residents we work with in aged care no longer have that option.

Health, mobility, energy… it all adds up. The desire to travel is still there; the logistics just aren’t.

That’s why I’m so excited about what’s next for Olive Express.

We’re about to launch 5 new immersive “train journey” destinations for aged care communities:

🚉 Hong Kong

🚉 Melbourne Central

🚉 Kenya

🚉 Switzerland journey

🚉 Tasmania

If you’d like your residents to “get away” in 2026 without leaving the home, I’d love to show you what these new journeys look like.

I’m actually a bit speechless about this one.

This year, we’re heading to Singapore because Olive Express has been named a finalist in the Innovation Awards at the Ageing Asia World Ageing Festival. 🇸🇬🚂

For anyone who doesn’t know the backstory…

I’ve worked in and around aged care for a long time. I’ve seen how hard people in this sector work and how much they care, even when the system makes it tough.

A few years ago, I had this random idea, scribbled on the back of a napkin over coffee:

“What if people living in aged care could jump on a ‘train’ and feel like they were travelling again, without leaving home?”

I decided to go all in.
I poured my savings into it.
Worked seven days a week.
Lots of trial and error, plenty of sleepless nights, and a few “what the hell am I doing?” moments.

Like every new business, we’ve had our challenges (plenty of them!), but we kept pushing.

Now that little idea has turned into something real a robust experience that’s:

Helping residents feel joy, anticipation and connection again

Giving families new memories with the people they love

Helping aged care homes bring more life and laughter into their communities

And now it’s being recognised on the world stage. That’s huge for me personally and honestly very humbling. I feel incredibly lucky.

Thank you to everyone who’s supported us along the way – residents, families, aged care teams, friends, mentors, you’ve all been part of this.

And a massive thank you to my amazing wife and business partner, who turns the crazy ideas into magical moments and has been there through all the highs and lows. None of this happens without you. ❤️

We’re going to Singapore, baby. 🙌🇸🇬🚂

(If you work in aged care and are curious about what we do with Olive Express, just send me a message – always happy to share.)

Christmas Day looked a little different at Bolton Clarke this year. 🎄🚂

Families visiting could jump on a Santa Claus Polar Express “train journey” with their loved ones – right outside the home.

Grandparents, grandkids, walkers, wheelchairs and Santa hats all lined up for a Christmas-day “holiday” together:

Christmas music, gentle motion and big-screen views

Space to sit side-by-side and share the moment

Kids asking for “one more trip”

The best part? Families stayed longer and residents said they felt like they’d actually been away for Christmas.

If you’d like big days like Christmas, Easter or Mother’s Day to be about doing something together, not just a quick visit, I’m happy to share what we’re doing with Olive Express.

“I’ve done this job for 27 years, and I’ve never seen anything like it.” It gave me goosebumps 😍

That’s Annie, one of the Lifestyle Coordinators at Sundale Ltd Aged Care.

In this short video, she shares what our Olive Express journeys have meant for her residents and their families:

residents who are brighter and more engaged

Families who stay a little longer and leave with a story to talk about

something genuinely different in the weekly routine

Families don’t often get to “go away” together in aged care.
This week in Coraki, they did. 🚂

One of our Olive Express immersive rooms is on a tour of northern NSW, and we’ve set up at BaptistCare Coraki for the week.

Residents, families and staff have been coming on board, sharing a “train journey” together and then spilling back out onto the lawn still talking about what they saw.

This is what Olive Express is all about – breaking the routine, creating something to look forward to, and giving families a reason to stay a little longer.

If you’d like to explore bringing an Olive Express immersive room to your community or region, I’m always happy to share what we’re doing on this tour.
