Amazing lunch today at Tai Tai Southbank OMG YUM!

Thanks Brenda Jamnik for inviting me along to learn all things new in digital marketing from Ethan Donati; it’s been an information packed few days.

𝗗𝗶𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄?!

Many would know that one of my hobbies is crocheting and no I’m not embracing my inner granny but I do want to share the history around this underrated craft.

𝙏𝒉𝙚 𝙎𝒆𝙘𝒓𝙚𝒕 𝑷𝙤𝒘𝙚𝒓 𝒐𝙛 𝘾𝒓𝙤𝒄𝙝𝒆𝙩: 𝑨 𝑻𝙝𝒓𝙚𝒂𝙙 𝙏𝒉𝙧𝒐𝙪𝒈𝙝 𝙏𝒊𝙢𝒆

Crochet tends to be seen as a gentle hobby—something you picture a grandmother doing in a rocking chair. But there’s so much more to it. Crochet has a fascinating history that’s often overlooked—one woven with strength, survival, and community.

It’s not just about yarn and hooks. Crochet has deep roots in resilience. While its exact origins are still debated, some historians trace similar needlework back to ancient Egypt, where crochet-like patterns were found in tombs. But here’s something not many people realise: during the Irish Potato Famine, crochet became a tool for survival. Irish women made and sold intricate lace pieces across Europe. Every stitch helped put food on the table—literally keeping families alive.

Then, during World War I, crochet took on a different role. Soldiers were taught to crochet as a therapeutic outlet to manage PTSD. The repetitive movement helped calm the mind, and in some cases, they even crocheted netting for camouflage in the trenches. A practical, powerful skill when you think about it.

And in the 1960s? Crochet turned quietly political. Women used it to express themselves through colourful blankets, clothing, and wearable art. It became a subtle form of protest—every stitch a statement within the feminist movement.

Today, crochet is being picked up by a whole new generation—not just for its beauty, but for its ability to soothe, connect, and empower. It’s now all over TikTok and YouTube, with creators showing that a crochet hook can be just as powerful as a microphone.

So next time you see someone with yarn in hand, know that it’s more than a pastime. It’s a legacy. A centuries-old thread of hope, healing, and quiet resistance—still being carried forward, one stitch at a time.

I don’t often get to regular networking groups but when I can I go to the ones that resonate most with me and my values.

Today I went to one of my favourites which is run by 2 amazingly generous women Leanne Blaney and Kirsty Fields - Ocean Network.

To add to this the night before I was privileged to be asked if I’d do the 5 minute business spotlight. I loved also that the main attraction was Belinda Rigano. She is a Pinterest expert and funnily enough her business is called Your Social Bee - the bee connection is real.

So, whilst I can talk endlessly about my passions, entrepreurship, connecting etc to actually talk about me, my business accomplishments I always feel challenged to do so. So I prepared the following and a tip at the end for those attending.

Hi, I'm Robyn Baker – the 'Boring Writer' who writes things no one wants to read… until they absolutely have to.

I don’t write novels or catchy social media posts. I write the serious, strategic, sleep-inducing stuff that wins grants, secures tenders, gets funding approved, and builds sustainable business growth. It's the kind of writing that moves money, shapes policy, and drives impact – and it has to be bulletproof.

With over 40 years of experience, I’ve helped thousands of clients turn complex business ideas into clear, compelling, and fundable solutions. I’m the founder of Busy Connecting, a trusted name in Australia for strategic writing and business development. My sweet spot? Helping startups, SMEs, and organisations take their next big leap – with words that work, systems that scale, and strategies that stick.

What I offer isn’t just writing – it’s high-level strategic thinking translated into practical action.

That includes:
• Winning grant and tender applications (tens of millions secured)
• Business planning and mentoring – from napkin ideas to investor-ready
• Strategic communication that gets stakeholders nodding
• Sustainable growth systems, digital solutions, and AI integration for real-world results.

I work deeply and personally with every client – because templates don’t win money. Tailored strategy does.

I’m also a tech-lover, mentor, board member, and international speaker – but at the core, I’m someone who believes in building genuine connections and creating change, one well-written sentence at a time.

So yes – I might be 'The Boring Writer' on paper, but what I write funds futures, builds legacies, and helps good people do great things.

MY TIPS - is something that needs to be used as a tool and whilst I’d never advocate using in a funding application etc as it’s not always right - you can shorten your answers with it or polish it.

Why not search for yourself and see what you get. Tell Ai to investigate you and see what it says and ensure if the answers are incorrect that you update and correct them and jump on all your socials too to ensure your information is current.

Are you an Australian business that does trade with the US or looking to expand into the US and are concerned about the new tariff charges that came into effect from 5 April 2025.

This is what you need to know.

US Tariff Changes: What You Need to Know 👇

- A 10% baseline tariff on most goods from Australia imported into the US took effect from 3:01 pm AEST, Saturday 5 April.

- This cost is borne by US importers, not Australian exporters.

- The US also announced higher reciprocal tariffs for other trading partners, which were temporarily paused until 9 July 2025.

- On 7 July, the US confirmed these reciprocal tariffs will take effect on 1 August 2025, unless countries strike a deal with the US before then.

- Australia is not currently subject to these higher reciprocal tariffs, but the situation is being monitored closely.
