Has post-workout soreness turned you off your health goals?
Post workout soreness also known as DOMS (delayed onset of muscle soreness) often occurs with sudden spikes in regular physical activity OR NEW physical activity.
It doesn't matter if you're a professional athlete or beginner to exercise... EVERYONE can experience DOMS.
The pain you temporarily feel (up to 7 days sometimes) is due to microtears in your muscles and the healing (inflammatory) process.
The healing process is important as when you are sore and resting, your muscles repair and re-build bigger and better to deal with the next round of physical activity.
Unfortunately, many people work out too vigorously on their first session.
No one wants to experience a high degree of pain on a regular basis, so it's normal to avoid your next workout due to fear of it happening again or worse!
The trick to any health habit is to SLOWLY push yourself out of your comfort zone.
If you've had an extremely painful post workout discomfort, know that it is normal to feel scared and anxious about working out.
There are many different ways to work out and for some people, it is simply doing one exercise a day spread over multiple hours.
Simply start where you feel comfortable and slowly add more repetitions or exercises so that YOU are in control of the discomfort.
It is YOUR journey -- don't give up!
