A growing body of research suggests that there is a relationship between hearing loss and reduced cognitive function in older adults, including an increased incidence of dementia.

In addition, the risk of dementia increases steeply as the degree of hearing loss worsens.

Medicare changes are widening access to hearing care

Not everyone gets to experience equal and affordable access to hearing care. Fortunately, policies are shifting to help audiologists tackle these inequities.

As of today, 1 March 2023, there are fundamental changes to the Medicare Benefits Schedule, which governs which healthcare services are rebated by the Government’s Medicare insurance scheme.

Nina Quinn, our Neurosensory CEO says the Medicare changes will naturally encourage other healthcare providers to work more closely with audiologists, leading to better patient outcomes.

“I think there is an emerging opportunity here to build new relationships in the healthcare system,” explains Nina.

“First of all, we’ve got a new level of access for Australians in regional and remote areas, where there may be no neurologists or ENTs, which will encourage audiologists and other healthcare professionals, like GPs, to work closer together.

“Secondly, there’s a real opportunity now for audiologists to help other professionals get the job done to treat patients. We can help them exclude sinister pathology and help them understand if there are any acute conditions that need a further referral.”

World Hearing Day is upon us.

Today will mark the launch of the first-ever World Report on Hearing. The report will:

Identify hearing health across all ages as a major global public health priority.

Urge governments / societies to prioritise hearing health - integrate ear and hearing care into primary health care programs.

Increase universal access to a range of treatments for hearing loss including cochlear implants, bone conduction and other hearing implants for those who need them.

Contain new WHO figures on numbers of people living with disabling hearing loss worldwide.

Include personal foreword from world’s youngest Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and advocate for education and girls’ equality, Malala Yousafzai.

You can find more information on the report here:

The World Report on Hearing (WRH) has been developed in response to the World Health Assembly resolution (WHA70.13), adopted in 2017 as a means of providing guidance for Member States to integrate ear and hearing care into their national health plans.

Today is International Cochlear Implant Day

What a day to celebrate, and to admire the work of Graeme Clark through a new book which tells his story.

A giant of medical science tells the story of the invention of the bionic ear. After watching his father struggle with hearing loss, Graeme Clark overcame obstacles and opposition to bring the gift of hearing to profoundly deaf children and adults.

1. You will be happier and more confident.

Hearing loss is associated with social isolation and depression. Experiencing a new situation is challenging for most, and if you have a hearing loss, it is common to not have the confidence to approach a new social experience. Treating your hearing loss means you won’t have to struggle to hear what’s being said and you can participate in the conversation with less effort and more confidence, letting you enjoy life more.

Social isolation can be seen as a state of having minimal contact with others. It reflects the size of your network of friends, family and social contacts and how often you meet up with these people.

Loneliness is related to social isolation but is a little different. It is a subjective feeling of having a lower level of social contact than you desire.
