So to kick start my page properly, I’ll explain what an OT actually is and does!
Occupational Therapists’ support people to do the activities (occupations) that they need or want to do.
defines Occupational Therapy as “Occupational therapy (OT) is a degree-based health profession, regulated by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). Occupational therapists use a whole person perspective to work with individuals, groups and communities to achieve optimal health and wellbeing through participation in the occupations of life.” (Occupational Therapy Australia, 2022)
With children, we use a holistic, family centred approach to support the child and family to participate in meaningful occupations I.e. play, being able to eat a meal, use cutlery, self cares (toileting, getting dressed), make friends, develop motor skills (big and little muscle movements), sensory processing (more on this to come), emotional regulation, sleep, fussy eaters and more!
In perinatal health, we support mothers and carers with their mental health, self cares, establishing routines, manual handling (lifting baby, getting on/off chairs and in/out of cars), connecting with baby, adjusting to new roles, supporting your child with their emotional regulation and sensory needs, and more
