New Australian research suggests the actual kilojoules our bodies absorb from nuts is up to 26% less than what's stated on food labels.

A team from the University of Wollongong recently collated the findings of carefully controlled feeding trials (21 in total), which had looked at how much of the fat from nuts is metabolised and converted into energy in the body, and how much is excreted.

Human studies on the digestible kilojoules of other nut types are not yet available. But it's likely that the kilojoule count is also an overestimation. A portion of the fat in nuts remains locked (or 'trapped') within their fibrous cell walls and cannot be absorbed by the body. Instead, nut eaters excrete some of this dietary fat in their stools – without it ever being used by the body as a source of energy. This helps to explain why, despite their high content of healthy fats, nuts are not linked with weight gain.
