From a child's perspective, when being introduced to new foods, it becomes clearer as to why foods can be rejected and other foods preferred.

What's important is to help them admire the differences using flexible thought processes by teaching how to appreciate the differences and the experience of eating through positive eating practices.

New Australian research suggests the actual kilojoules our bodies absorb from nuts is up to 26% less than what's stated on food labels.

A team from the University of Wollongong recently collated the findings of carefully controlled feeding trials (21 in total), which had looked at how much of the fat from nuts is metabolised and converted into energy in the body, and how much is excreted.

Human studies on the digestible kilojoules of other nut types are not yet available. But it's likely that the kilojoule count is also an overestimation. A portion of the fat in nuts remains locked (or 'trapped') within their fibrous cell walls and cannot be absorbed by the body. Instead, nut eaters excrete some of this dietary fat in their stools – without it ever being used by the body as a source of energy. This helps to explain why, despite their high content of healthy fats, nuts are not linked with weight gain.

We've just jumped on the bandwagon of roasted cauliflower leaves. It's bugged me for a long time how much waste there is with cauliflower, all those leaves surrounding that tiny little cloud in the centre.
Until I was watching some daytime TV show on the weekend - hey TV actually is good for something!

When the shopping bill creeps up further and further each week, and the landfill impact is getting to you or the compost bin fills with all those vege cut-offs quicker than they can decompose: it's time to start using the whole vege, not just the florets, not just adding the stem.. the whole thing!

And the result was delicious - we added a touch of salt, pepper and olive oil but the flavour combos are endless!

As described by my kids, they look and taste like seaweed, yum!!

Who else is keen to try it?

Food holds no moral value.. remember that today, and always.

❌ You are not being naughty for eating chocolate 🍫 [or any other snack food]
❌ Noone needs to feel guilty by another person for eating 🍦 [or any food]
❌ One snack or meal out 🍕🍟🍔🥞 isn't going to tip the scales significantly over the course of the week in you energy balance
❌ Buying chips and lollies "just because" doesn't need justification or an explanation to the checkout operator or fellow shoppers (even mentally)
❌ You don't need to "walk off" the burger and chips you just ate

😬 Unless.. it was your coworkers or flatmates and you didn't ask 😉
Or it was mouldy, eww
Or you didn't reheat your leftovers to piping hot
Or you forgot to check the expiry date and realise after you've eaten it that it was out of date

✔ Food is just food. It is to be eaten without guilt, shame, judgement, compensatory exercise and remorse

✔ Food needs to be savoured and enjoyed, every mouthful - experience the flavours and textures, acknowledge where it came from and the effort put into preparing it.

Welcome and thanks for following!
I use it basically as a way for me to separate my food pics, healthy eating advice and tips to eat well, from my private life insta full of my adventures walking/hiking, travelling, sewing and baking.

I consult and coach people all over Brisbane with new and old nutrition-related diagnoses (e.g. Type 2 Diabetes, heart disease, IBS) and also consult on general healthy eating/lifestyle advice to prevent chronic conditions (e.g. lowering cholesterol, eating less sugar).

Link in profile for website and contact details, please share my page with friends and family too, word of mouth is the only way we can ethically get testimonials 🤩

Turned our favourite stir fry into a homemade pizza on a wholemeal base with a little mozzarella cheese. Serve with more roasted veges and you have a two tray dinner (2 pizzas with veges spread around the sides) that the kids can help prepare - grate cheese, cut capsicum, spread sauce.

I posted this for two reasons 1. I made the lemon tart and feeling quite proud, even with my very rustic pastry crust and 2. after seeing a post from a “public figure” claiming that while you don’t need to track calories, you probably should if you’re not losing weight… he even mentioned watching the amount of olive oil you use to cook your veggies which makes me so 🤬!!

Aside from the advice being misinformed and NOT the latest science, especially with regard to not all calories being created equal and weight is not a simple calories in/calories out equation - how sad that people who follow him might start using less olive oil in their cooking in fear of the calories.

Not only does cooking your veggies in oil make them taste better, we absorb more of their nutrients when they are cooked in fat. Olive oil also has a satiating affect on our appetite, helping us feel more satisfied after a meal and fuller for longer.

You don’t need to track calories in food to manage your eating. If, for the most part, you are eating to your appetite cues and eating in a way that feels satisfying in the moment and overall, you will be eating the amount of food that is right for you. This is what intuitive eating is about. If you have been dieting or following others advice on how to eat, you may have lost touch with your appetite and what satisfies YOU and feel confused about how to eat. The good news is, no matter how confused you have become, you can relearn how to eat intuitively.
