Ask R U OK, any day 💛

We see every day how important it is to check in with the people around us. For many of our clients living with mental health challenges, the simple act of someone asking “Are you OK?” can make all the difference.

It doesn’t need to be R U OK? Day to start the conversation. Reaching out, listening, and showing up for someone is powerful. It can open doors to connection, support, and hope.

I’m reminded constantly that it’s the small, human moments that matter most. A conversation could change a life, not just today, but any day. 🌱

The key to supporting someone with a brain injury is taking their big challenges and breaking them down into bite-sized steps. These three strategies are great first steps.

1️⃣Set up phone alarms for key reminders. Does your client need reminders to be read aloud? Download the “Talking Voice Alarm - Reminder” app to make it easy!

2️⃣Break down their day. A quick and easy way to do this is using sticky notes on a wall. You can use different colours to highlight different tasks (e.g. daily tasks, appointments, leisure time).

3️⃣Help manage energy use throughout the day. You can do this by scheduling regular rest periods into their day. Create a list of easy go-to activities they can choose from to help them relax and rest. Your list can include: listening to music, watching a tv show or playing a meditation track.

✨Hot tip: Combine strategies! Add rest breaks into their phone reminders and daily sticky note routine.

Know someone with a brain injury and feeling lost on how you can help?

Living with, or supporting someone after a brain injury can bring big changes in how they think and view the world. Skills like memory, attention and problem-solving may not be the same as before. This can be challenging not only for the person, but also for families and carers who are adjusting to a new and different person.

The good news is, there are practical ways to make everyday life a little smoother. Remember: progress may be slow, and every brain injury journey looks different. Small wins, shared patience, and celebrating steps forward can make a big difference along the way. 💙

Jasmin has been working on her chopping!

OT Lisa found that Jasmin learnt best with visual guides (specific to her, for her understanding) and lots of practice.

Jasmin was chopping onions all shapes and sizes to start... Now she’s got slicing and dicing down pat and rates her confidence 10/10!
