When a client says “this is ridiculous, nothing is working” try this script to move the situation forward.

In these tricky situations it can be hard to find the right words to say. I've created a PDF with 18 scripts you can use when they come up.

If you’ve ever walked away from a visit replaying what you wish you said, this will help.

Link to the full article is in the comments, you can find the PDF at the bottom of the page! ✨

Shoutout to Sarah Uncle for running a great session at the new Independent Living Specialists showroom in Logan! ✨

Sessions like this are always a good reminder that we all approach prescriptions a little differently. Hearing how other OTs are assessing scooters and thinking through different funding schemes was actually one of the most useful parts of the morning.

Always good getting OTs in a room talking shop.

Looking forward to the next client I get to bring here for a trial!

OT Café Diaries 📍 Taste My Bean in Hillcrest

Sometimes you just need a quick stop between visits. Not a full sit-down lunch. Just something simple that does the job.

🍽 Food: 3.5/5
A range of cabinet food options. Fairly basic, but perfect if you're after a quick bite. Decently priced too if you want something better than a 7/11 sandwich without committing to a full meal.

🥤 Drink: 4/5
Iced coffee today and it definitely hit the spot.

🌿 Environment: 4/5
Plenty of seating and lots of space when I visited. Quiet with some background music, which makes it an easy place to sit for a few minutes between appointments. Parking and toilets available too.

✨ Bonus points:
Drive-through coffee (very OT-friendly when you're running between visits) and the space is accessible. I saw someone in a power wheelchair enjoying their coffee comfortably while I was there.

⭐️ Overall: 4/5

A reliable, practical option when you're working around Hillcrest and need a quick recharge.

Mobile OTs know, sometimes the best café is simply the one that fits your day.

When I first started working as an OT, I thought everyone else had figured it out.

Meanwhile I was driving between visits replaying conversations in my head. 💬

No one really talks about that stage of the job. The part where you're technically qualified, but you're still building your internal map of how OT actually works in the real world.

How long a visit should take.
How much uncertainty is normal.
How to carry the responsibility that comes with recommending changes to someone’s home, supports, or equipment.

At the time I thought those doubts meant I wasn’t confident enough yet.

Looking back, they were the beginning of real clinical thinking.

So if you're in that stage right now, you might be closer to growing into the role than you think. 🙂‍↕️✨

Funding periods confuse a lot of people. As an OT, this is the way I break it down for my clients.

Once people understand how plan periods and funding periods work together, planning supports across the year becomes much easier. It stops feeling like everything has to happen all at once.

Use this script the next time a client asks about funding periods. 💬

Save this if you want a simple visual to come back to when explaining it.

Before you decide that, look at what’s actually wearing you down.

The constant KPI pressure?
Not really having a say in your diary or caseload?
Spending more time writing than thinking?
Expectations that don’t sit right clinically?

Or is it a mix of all of it, and it feels outside of your control?

There’s a difference between OT not fitting you and your current workplace setup not fitting you.

If you don’t separate the two, you risk walking away from a career you might still love in a different environment, with different support.

Once you know what’s actually off, you have options.

That might mean a conversation, a boundary, a different role, or a different team.

Leaving is one option, it doesn’t have to be the first one.

OT Café Diaries 📍 Khao Thai Forest Lake

$16.90 lunch specials… can you tell we love a lunch special here?

🍜 Food: 5/5
Chicken pad thai + green curry with coconut rice. Sooo delicious and such good portions for lunch. Not too big that you end up in a food coma, but enough to properly recharge you for the rest of the day.

🥤 Drinks: 5/5
Thai green tea. Delicious. Refreshing. One of those “why don’t I order this more often?” moments.

🌿 Environment: 5/5
Easy lunch spot inside Forest Lake Shopping Centre. Simple, comfortable, and works well between appointments.

✨ Bonus points:
Friendly staff (always makes a difference), located right in the shopping centre, and you can swing past Kmart to stock up on therapy resources while you’re there. Productive lunch break unlocked.

⭐️ Overall: 5/5
Flavour-packed, generous, and honestly somewhere I’d love to come back to in my own time for dinner.

If you’re a mobile OT working around Forest Lake, go here!!

When a client says “can’t we just do the quickest option?”

They’re not trying to cut corners, they want relief.

And we do too.

But quick doesn’t always mean right. If the option doesn’t properly fit their body, home, or routine, it often creates more delay later, not less.

This is where boundaries matter.

Here’s the structure I use:
1️⃣Validate
2️⃣Name the boundary
3️⃣Offer a quick win

This structure allows you to still work towards an outcome while putting in place boundaries to protect your clinical reasoning and duty of care.

I’ve written a full article called “When Clients Want It Now: OT Boundaries That Keep Trust and Momentum.”

Inside is a free PDF with 18 real-world scripts you can literally use tomorrow when you’re stuck for words.

If you’ve walked away from one of these chats replaying what you should’ve said, this will help.

OT Café Diaries 📍 Sabor

This one’s for the filos!

🍽 Food: 5/5
So many amazing options, including tempting lunch specials, but I went for one of their burgers. Look at the size! Properly filling and very satisfying.

🥤 Drink: 4.5/5
Ube latte, because obviously. Smooth, comforting, and something a bit different to break up the workday. They also do protein milkshakes, the blueberry Biscoff is high on my next-to-try list.

🌿 Environment: 5/5
Quiet, relaxed, with both indoor and outdoor seating, easy in any weather. I could genuinely see myself setting up here to write a report without feeling rushed.

✨ Bonus points:
Has a toilet (always worth mentioning) and a really welcoming, low-key vibe.

🚗 Parking note:
Limited on-site parking, but street parking is available nearby.

⭐️ Overall: 4.7/5
Save this OT-friendly spot if you want a calm lunch stop that actually lets your nervous system settle.

OT Café Diaries 📍 Andonis Cafè & Bar Pallara

This one’s ideal when you’ve ended up needing breakfast for lunch (why did you miss breakfast??) 👀

🍽 Food: 5/5
The mushroom benny was generous & filling. Perfect if you’re running on empty between appointments.

🥤 Drink: 5/5
Watermelon juice on a warm day. Refreshing, not too sweet, and exactly what you want mid-shift.

🌿 Environment: 5/5
Plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, relaxed, and easy to actually sit and reset.

✨ Bonus points:
Heaps of parking, a treats cabinet for something to take on the road, extremely lovely staff!
Shoutout to Amin’s Butcher & Grill. next door, makes for an easy dinner stop.

New spot, and honestly my favourite Andonis I’ve been to so far.

⭐️ Overall: 5/5
Very mobile OT–friendly and well worth adding to your rotation.

Save this one if you’re working around Pallara.

I jumped on the caricature trend and this is what my OT brain looks like 🧠

Thinking about function, equipment, funding, and how it all fits into real life.

If this resonates with how your OT brain works, take it as a sign.
