To mark Donate Life Week, we're sharing Barb's story.

Barb has worked at St Vincent’s Private Hospital Northside in the operating theatres for 10 years and knows the heartbreak of making the decision to donate after the death of her brother Rob in 2017, following a catastrophic brain injury. Rob was a widower with no children and had no written instructions such as an advanced health directive, enduring power of attorney or being on the Australian Organ Donor register.

While it was a very emotional decision for Barb and her family to make, it was a very easy one, and Barb says that from a moral and medical point of view it was the right thing to do. Two people, one from Brisbane and another from Western Australia received Rob’s kidneys and Barb has received three letters from one of the recipients.

Barb says that the hope and joy in those letters really confirmed that it was the right thing to do. Every year on Rob’s anniversary, she reads those letters about what a happy, healthy life this lady is leading.

Barb’s message is this – if you could, would you? Donating organs and tissues is a powerful act of kindness that can transform the lives of others. Only 1 in 3 Australians are registered to be a donor on the Australian Organ Donor Register (AODR). Let's change that statistic. Join us in the and register as an organ and tissue donor today at www.donatelife.gov.au.Together, we can make a difference!

Meet Amy, one of our wonderful Palliative Care Counsellors at St Vincent's Private Hospital Brisbane. Amy has only recently joined the St Vincent's family, beginning her role about six months ago.

As a counsellor on the Palliative Care Team, Amy supports patients and families throughout their journey within the palliative care service, whilst offering bereavement support to family members following the death of their loved one.

"The team here is really wonderful. It is lovely to work alongside other passionate counsellors and health professionals," says Amy.

"I truly love working in the palliative care space – it is such a privilege to work with people who are nearing the end of their life. It is sacred and important work to offer a gentle, safe space for them to share openly about their fears and worries, but also to provide an opportunity for them to reflect upon their life – the highs and lows, the challenges and triumphs they have faced over their life."

In addition to providing individual counselling, Amy offers long-term therapy to those in need. She currently facilitates our bereavement group, providing families with a beautiful opportunity to come and connect with others who have similar lived experiences.

“My Mantra in doing this work is to create spaces where people can tell the truth about their grief,” says Amy. The group normalises grief, exploring how clients are managing the ebbs and flows of life after loss.

Thank you Amy, for all the work you do for our patients and families at St Vincent's Private Hospital Brisbane, and your commitment to providing better and fairer care, always.

As both an engineer and an artist, Kristy-Ann brings a unique perspective to our Arts in Health program at St Vincent's Private Hospital Northside and Brisbane. With a lifelong passion for birds and a love of bold colours, Kristy-Ann's paintings help brighten up the halls of our hospital.

Art has always been a significant part of Kristy-Ann's life. Her mother Anne, also a valued artist in our Arts in Health program, inspired regular drawing, painting and creating throughout her children's lives.

"Mum and I still paint together regularly, and I feel blessed that we can do that," says Kristy-Ann.

"I hope my artwork brings colour and joy into the hospital, because I believe that surrounding ourselves with bright, uplifting art can genuinely lift our mood and outlook. In a place where people may be facing illness, stress or uncertainty, art can offer comfort, reflection, or even escape. It gives shape to feelings we can’t always express with words and allows us to reconnect with something deeper, bringing comfort, hope, and a sense of connection."

"I’m delighted to be able to bring my art into the hospital to bring some of the joy and colour of the ‘Outside In’ where it can hopefully make a difference."

Thank you Kristy-Ann for enriching the hospital environment, for patients, visitors and staff alike.

This Pain Week, we’re sharing the story of Navy veteran Ashley Semmens - who lived with chronic pain for over a decade after a bomb blast in Afghanistan.

With support from pain medicine specialist Dr Ramsey Jabbour at St Vincent’s Private Hospital Northside, Ashley underwent a targeted treatment called radiofrequency ablation - and for the first time in years, found meaningful relief.

Ashley then went on to achieve a world-first: crossing the English Channel swimming on his back using only his legs.

His story is a powerful reminder that evidence-based pain care can transform lives.

Congratulations to our Occupational Therapy (OT) Team at St Vincent's Private Hospital Brisbane who continue to receive positive feedback for the care and attention they provide our patients. Here is some of the beautiful feedback that has been left by recent patients and visitors:

"This hospital is absolutely amazing and the staff were so professional and caring. Rehab and OT did everything to help with my recovery. I was treated like a very important private patient, even though I was a public patient. My doctor was also very caring and listened to what I had to say. I would and have recommended St Vincent's to everyone."

"Very friendly OT staff and environment. The physio staff helped me to work at my own pace. Top class equipped physio room."

"Great care, attention, and service. All the staff were amazing, nothing was too much trouble. Use of the gym with physiotherapists, plus information sessions with qualified councillors were made available. They even had an art and craft lady visit with projects you could make during your stay."

Well done to the OT team for this well-deserved praise. We thank you for your commitment to providing better and fairer care, always.

Did you know that Chronic Pain impacts 3.4 million Australians?*

Today marks the beginning of National Pain Week. Run by Chronic Pain Australia, Pain Week is an opportunity to remind all those within our community the social isolation that pain can create. We understand that chronic pain can significantly impact daily life. This week, we are committed to highlighting the importance of understanding, managing, and treating chronic pain effectively.

Persistent or chronic pain is defined by Chronic Pain Australia as long-lasting pain that goes on for more than three months, or past normal tissue healing time.

St Vincent's Private Hospital Brisbane is one of the largest providers of pain management services in south-east Queensland. We have been helping patients living with chronic pain conditions for more than 10 years, working closely with them and their loved ones to help them gain confidence and skills to manage their pain and achieve their goals.

Our pain management services include interventional pain procedures and rehabilitation. Find more information about our pain services at: https://www.svph.org.au/hospitals/brisbane/pain-services

Meet Anne Wood, a talented local artist whose artwork features at St Vincent's Private Hospital Brisbane and Northside as part of our Arts in Health "Outside In" program.

From a young age, Anne has been inspired by the artwork in her life, particularly in the way it impacted her mother. Hoping to move people similarly, Anne's work captures the magic of a simple moment. She likes to challenge herself with a variety of subject matter that encourages her to try new techniques and continue to improve.

"Art has a unique ability to take us out of ourselves, it draws us into a world beyond the every day to a place of imagination, beauty, and meaning. Engaging with art reminds us that we’re not alone, and in doing so, it uplifts our spirits and opens space for healing," says Anne.

As a longtime artist and mother of two, Anne enjoys sharing her love of creation with her children and now, grandchildren. Her daughter Kristy-Ann (KADuffy Art) has inherited her mother's love for art and is involved in the Arts in Health program herself. Check in next week, to hear more about Kristy-Ann's work.

Thank you, Anne, for sharing your talent and love for art with our patients, families and visitors.

'Outside In' is a program run by St Vincent’s Private Hospital Northside and Brisbane where local artists are invited to showcase their work throughout our hospitals, providing patients with an escape from the clinical environment and a connection to the outside world. All purchases of artwork exhibited in 'Outside In' support these artists, and help us to grow and sustain our Arts Program through a 20% commission.

At St Vincent’s Private Hospital Brisbane, we’re deeply grateful for the kind words shared by our patients, families, and visitors. This week, we’re shining a spotlight on our incredible Floor 2 nursing team, who have received some wonderful feedback in recent weeks:

"The hospital provided wonderful care. Your nurses are exceptional and the building was spotless! I was there for rehab as a public patient and there was certainly no difference in my standard of care or interaction."

"The reason for my high rating is to wholeheartedly congratulate the management on their staff performance and staff selection. All the staff, including the doctors, specialists, physios, OTs, nurses, food staff, laundry staff, and cleaners were always courteous, kind, extremely helpful, cheerful and knowing. They went above and beyond their line of duty to assist in any and every way possible. Every member of the staff has been so kind and helpful and they always have a smile on their face."

"The level of care is exceptional. Could in no way fault it. I felt very safe being here and having the Giovanni Chapel in the building was of great comfort to me."

Well done to our Floor 2 team on this well-earned recognition. Your values of compassion, justice, integrity and excellence continue to make a meaningful difference every day.

St Vincent's Private Hospital Brisbane has launched its annual artwork exhibition in celebration of 2025 NAIDOC Week! Titled "The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy", this year's exhibition showcases artwork from various Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists from within the local community.

Tallira's (Twarra’s Dreaming) series came into fruition from the spiritual guidance of her Ancestors. Each canvas has its own story to tell and purpose for being created.

As an indigenous artist, Tallira's journey has been filled with ups and downs. Reflecting on how far she's come as an artist, she hopes her own journey will inspire other young Indigenous artists to take the leap of faith they have been seeking.

"Establishing my very own independent art business only sparked my creative fire further, it gives me a platform to be able to reach my friends and family, great artists alike, and amazing supporting customers, which is what I use as motivation to keep aiming for the stars," says Tallira.

"Indigenous art is so much more than just dot-painting, there’s so much history, connection and lore to learn from it. It’s a way of life for us, and I love being able to share my knowledge and understanding through a beautiful painting. Showing your support for emerging youth artists from all backgrounds, plays an essential role in helping us to grow and develop as artists and as people. It only takes one person."

These works have been on display since 7th July. We encourage all those within the St Vincent's Private Hospital Brisbane community to pay a visit to this wonderful exhibition on display.

This NAIDOC Week, we love to see our teams sporting the St Vincent's cultural uniform, featuring an original artwork that represents the land on which St Vincent's Private Hospital Brisbane and Northside stands.

Thanks to the hard work of our Meanjin Reconciliation Action Committee, these beautifully designed cultural uniforms can be worn by members of our team. This artwork concept was developed by Aboriginal artist Jenny Kent together with our dedicated Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander team during a workshop held in late 2023.

The artwork has specific ties to the Chermside and Kangaroo Point hospital locations, with rivers flowing to the ocean, water holes, native animal tracks, Moreton Bay fig and eucalyptus trees. The hospitals’ values of compassion, justice, integrity and excellence are also a central focus of the work.
