Congratulations to Donna for receiving her 20-year Service Award at St Vincent’s Private Hospital Northside’s recent annual Staff and Volunteer Awards.

Donna is the Executive Manager for Quality & Risk at St Vincent’s Private Hospital Northside and Brisbane. In her role, she constantly collaborates with different departments to maintain and improve the high standards of care that St Vincent’s is known for.

Donna loves the incredibly dedicated professionals she gets to work alongside, who truly care about the outcome of patients and colleagues. “It’s inspiring to be a part of a team that’s so committed to continuous improvement and making a real difference.”

So what’s kept Donna at St Vincent’s for an incredible 20 years? Donna credited it to our rich culture. “St Vincent’s has a strong sense of mission and values that align with my own,” she says, “There’s a deep sense of purpose in the work we do.”

During her time at St Vincent’s, Donna has witnessed the organisation’s significant growth, not only in size but also in complexity. Embracing innovation and evidence-based practices, St Vincent’s always places the patient at the centre. “It’s been rewarding to be a part of that evolution”, says Donna.

Donna is proud to be a part of a team that doesn’t just talk about quality and safety – but who live it every day. “I’m grateful to contribute to a legacy of care that spans generations,” she says.

Thank you, Donna, for your many years of dedication to providing better and fairer care, always. We are so grateful to have you as part of the St Vincent’s family.

Today, we would like to share with you the story of our incredible volunteer Giovanni Porta, who provides a free JP (Justice of the Peace) service at St Vincent’s Private Hospital Northside and Brisbane.

In May 2023, Giovanni was diagnosed with a rare form of blood cancer. After receiving his shocking diagnosis, Giovanni underwent immediate oncology treatment and received intensive chemotherapy for a total of 120 days. Giovanni found himself in the same chair his wife, Trish, had been battling an ‘inoperable stomach cancer’ just 10 years earlier.

“Thankfully, Trish and I both survived the battle with cancer, and we’re both in pretty good health now. It was a very challenging time for both of us when we were undergoing treatment,” he says.

While receiving his treatment, Giovanni mentioned to a staff member that he owned a law firm, Porta Lawyers. Word spread, and someone asked Giovanni to witness a legal document while he was ‘sitting in his chemo chair’. It wasn’t long until he began getting regular requests to witness documents while in the ward.

“I was happy to do it. I wasn’t going anywhere in a hurry,” he says.

After completing his cancer treatment, Giovanni decided to ‘give back’ to the St Vincent’s community as a volunteer Justice of the Peace. Now, each Wednesday morning, you’ll find Giovanni sitting at his portable table in our hospital foyer with his pen and stamp.

“I call it my ‘weekly victory lap’ where I come back to the place where I was diagnosed with a rare form of deadly blood cancer, and I feel like I get to celebrate life by helping other people and by using my professional skills,” says Giovanni. “If I help one person on my volunteer day, that’s a good day.”

At St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne, our Emergency Department includes a dedicated Mental Health and Alcohol and Other Drug (MHAOD) Hub - an integrated, specialist-led service providing immediate support to people in crisis.

This collaborative model brings together emergency clinicians, mental health specialists, and AOD teams to offer trauma-informed, person-centred care when it’s needed most. “We see people from all walks of life and treat everyone with respect,” says Emergency Nurse Olivia Bollington. “We listen and involve them in their care.”

The average length of stay for those attending the Hub is 40 per cent shorter than the average length of stay they would have experienced in our ED as part of the general mix of patients.

It’s part of a national St Vincent’s commitment to caring for people experiencing mental health challenges, addiction, and disadvantage - across our hospitals, outreach teams and digital services.

On Thursday, August 24th, team members from St Vincent's Private Hospital Brisbane and Northside came together to attend the BlackCard Cultural Tour.

BlackCard is a service that aims to build cultural competency and strengthen ethical behaviours by enabling people to understand and undertake respectful relationships with land and each other. The activity provided our St Vincent's teams with a rich history of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people through art installations in the Arts Precinct at South Bank.

Thank you to the BlackCard team for a wonderful day, sharing your knowledge and personal experiences with us. This was a valuable opportunity to connect with our community and learn more Meanjin culture and history.

While recently filming at St Vincent’s Private Hospital Brisbane, Australian actor Brenton Thwaites took time out to play a few songs for patients in the palliative care ward.

He was shooting scenes for a new series 'Two Years Later' at the hospital’s Kangaroo Point site and gave the impromptu performance during his lunch break, hoping to bring a little joy to the day.

That’s when Brenton met Joe – a St Vincent’s patient and, as it turned out, a former musician himself! In truly heartwarming scenes, Joe and some of the palliative care ward staff listened as Brenton played. Then, Jamaican-born Joe asked if he knew any reggae. Sure enough, Brenton did – and the pair jammed together like old musical buddies, sharing a few minutes of pure delight for Joe and the small group of delighted ward staff.
